About The Position

SGS is looking for Quality Assurance Inspector - Civil - Contract candidates to submit their applications to our clients. If successful, the contract would start around Q3 2026 and the contract could last up to 2 years. Hours of work and schedule to be determined. This role is responsible for auditing civil construction activities to ensure compliance with safety standards, regulations, and approved project requirements. The successful candidate will perform site inspections, verify workmanship and materials, enforce safe work practices, and maintain accurate daily reports, including progress tracking, inspections, and documentation. This position requires hands-on field experience in inspection and/or supervision services for major building construction projects and strong knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), and applicable standards and guidelines along with the ability to independently assess and enforce compliance on active construction sites.

Requirements

  • Must holds a valid Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation or a Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Must have over 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience on educational, healthcare facilities, and/or other public building projects
  • Familiar with the policies, procedures, and standards of the Nova Scotia Department of Public Works.
  • Familiar with the “DC350 Design Requirements Manual” of the Nova Scotia Department of Public Works.
  • Must be able to work in the construction site and flexible hours of work.
  • Advanced skill in site inspection to verify compliance with drawings & technical specifications; perform visual inspections according to the criteria
  • Excellent in maintaining records of work quality and overseeing project non-conformance reporting process
  • Experienced in monitoring construction, work schedule, keep daily inspection logs, photographs & receipt inspections, communicate project status, ensuring execution proficiency, accuracy, and professionalism
  • Knowledge in project scope, change control, defect and warranty claims, escalating issues & resolve disputes
  • Excellent in developing project documents, procedures to support QA and QC, complete the necessary quality forms related to monitoring or inspection work; obtain information required for carrying out the work
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings& specifications based on engineered design.
  • Knowledge of the following civil standards; Canadian Civil Code, CSA, ASCE, ETC.
  • Skilled in identifying non-conformances, workmanship issues, and safety risks.

  • Extended hours and shift work may be required from time to time.

Responsibilities

  • Review issued construction drawings and project documentation prior to construction start to understand scope, risks, and key requirements
  • Participate in Kick off meeting progress construction meetings, commissioning and turnover meetings and warranty meetings
  • Conduct site visits and perform regular inspections to monitor construction activities and ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and applicable regulations
  • Assess site conditions, identify hazards, and confirm that contractors are following approved safety procedures and regulatory requirements
  • Monitor and report on adherence to all safety standards specified in the project documents, including requirements for safety meetings, site orientation, and safety inspections.
  • Monitor and report on adherence to all environmental standards specified in the project documents, including sediment and erosion control, hazardous material containment and disposal, fire protection, pollution control, infection control, etc.
  • Monitor and report on the installation of all materials and workmanship and their adherence to the contract documents
  • Maintain detailed daily inspection records, including site activities, measurements, marked-up drawings, and photographic evidence
  • Maintain project information and execution reports, drawings, and ensure that project documents are current and valid.
  • Track construction progress and document any deviations from design due to field conditions, scope changes, or unforeseen issues
  • Verify installation quality and confirm materials comply with approved bill of materials and project standards
  • Inspect all roof work with particular attention to flashing, connections to existing work, waterproofing at roof drains and fall arrest anchors, etc.
  • Inspect building services including plumbing, ducting, wiring, lighting, etc.
  • Monitor fire stopping, fire protection, caulking, etc.
  • Verify inspections are carried out on all work prior to being concealed, e.g. underground, in-wall, or above-ceiling plumbing, electrical, fire stops, etc.
  • Witness all on-site tests such as concrete, soils, asphalt, pressure testing of piping, etc
  • Review and validate contractor submissions, including progress quantities, monthly billing, and change orders
  • Monitor, verify, and sign backup documentation for all time and material work. Maintain records as appropriate
  • Identify, document, and report safety and quality non-compliance issues (NCRs) and follow up on corrective actions
  • Support incident reporting and participate in investigations when required
  • Provide timely project status updates to internal teams and clients
  • Perform final inspections and walkdowns, prepare deficiency lists, and confirm readiness for service
  • Review and validate As-Built drawings and project documentation in accordance with applicable standards and requirements
  • Support project close-out activities, including final reporting, documentation review, and lessons learned
  • Participate in post-construction and share lessons learned.
