About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is currently seeking a qualified and experienced individual for the position of Qualified Craft Worker (HVACR) to join our team within the Physical Plant. This role involves performing highly skilled HVACR work in accordance with trade practices and codes on heating, ventilation, cooling, and refrigeration systems. The position operates, maintains, installs, and repairs complex HVACR systems, including equipment using Freon, chilled water, and advanced air-handling components. Responsibilities also include monitoring and troubleshooting computerized control systems, planning and executing work independently, and interpreting technical data. DVA has been caring for veterans and their dependents for over 160 years, focusing on serving those who have served through its Office of Advocacy and Assistance, Residential Facility, Healthcare Center, and Cemetery and Burial Services.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trade.
  • Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trades.
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard HVACR trade practices.
  • Skills in interpersonal skills, oral and written communication.
  • Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records.
  • Ability to utilize computer software.
  • Possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including possession and retention of a State of Connecticut heating, piping, and/or cooling license (may be required by appointing authority).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a healthcare environment that operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
  • Experience with low and medium pressure steam 5psi-50psi.
  • Experience with larger HVAC equipment including commercial boilers, chillers, energy recovery units, commercial electric motors, semi hermetic compressors, and equipment above 10-ton capacity.
  • Experience with natural gas and oil-fired boilers.
  • Experience with automated building control systems.
  • Holds a State of Connecticut D2 license or higher.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Performs highly skilled HVACR work in accordance with trade practices and codes on heating, ventilation, cooling, and refrigeration systems.
  • Operates, maintains, installs, and repairs complex HVACR systems, including equipment using Freon, chilled water, and advanced air-handling components.
  • Monitors and troubleshoots computerized control systems, ensuring proper airflow, pressurization, and system performance.
  • Independently plans and executes work, including estimating materials, determining cooling requirements, and completing technical tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Interprets technical data such as psychrometric charts and performs diagnostic tasks including minor fuel tests, gas leak checks, and water treatment adjustments.
  • Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard HVACR trade practices and codes on air systems used in heating, ventilating and refrigeration.
  • Determines required cooling capacity of units needed for small areas.
  • Controls and measures air flow, room air changes and room pressurizing.
  • Makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks.
  • Keeps necessary records.
  • May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required.
  • May install, modify, repair and assemble electrical or pneumatic controls for this type of equipment.
  • May inspect and repair steam traps fed by main system at various locations.
  • May remove pipe insulation materials associated with repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA approved methods.
  • May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts.
  • May operate heavy equipment.
  • May respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports.
