About The Position

Humboldt Sawmill Company (HSC) is seeking a Quad Saw Operator to join their sawmill team in Scotia, CA. This is a non-exempt position with an hourly rate of $33.65. The Mendocino Companies own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Collectively providing 950 employees and their families with excellent wages and benefits in communities throughout the Western USA. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Basic Computer skills and the ability to operate a touch screen computer program
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to follow instructions provided in written, verbal, or diagram form and apply common sense understanding to carry out tasks
  • Basic reading and writing skills, including the ability to read instructions and memos and write simple sentences

Nice To Haves

  • Five (5) years related experience and/or minimum of six months training; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
  • Understanding of basic timber grading rules preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate quad saw equipment in a safe and productive manner.
  • Monitor saw operation and lumber flow from the quad saw to the trimmer, listening and watching for variations that may indicate equipment or production issues.
  • Change saws as required and inspect quad saw equipment daily.
  • Inspect equipment for broken hoses, damage, or other potential issues and perform general machine inspections each day.
  • Identify equipment or operational problems and report concerns to the Team Leader, Supervisor, or Maintenance as appropriate.
  • Monitor the computer system to verify the correct species and ensure information clears properly through the system.
  • Operate touchscreen computer controls and monitor system messages, alarms, and machine warnings.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Communicate with other machine operators to support safe and efficient production flow.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
