About The Position

The Saw Operator is responsible for accurately cutting raw materials (such as metal bar, tube, plate, or structural shapes) to specified dimensions using manual and automatic saw equipment. This role supports machining and fabrication operations by ensuring materials are cut safely, precisely, and efficiently according to work orders and blueprints. The Saw Operator works closely with machinists, production supervisors, and quality control personnel to maintain workflow, meet production deadlines, and uphold quality standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1–2 years of experience operating band saws, cold saws, or similar cutting equipment in a manufacturing or machine shop environment.
  • Experience measuring materials using tape measures, calipers, micrometers, or other precision tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, cut sheets, and basic blueprints.
  • Experience working with common materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
  • Basic Math skills: knowledge of machines, set up procedures, operational methods, material identification and production requirements, and measurements.
  • Carefully measures and verifies dimensions before and after cutting.
  • Notices material defects or inconsistencies.
  • Maintains accuracy to prevent scrap and rework.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (8–10-hour shifts).
  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and twisting.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials up to 50 lbs. independently; heavier materials with assistance or lifting equipment.
  • Manual dexterity to operate machinery controls and handle small components.
  • Ability to read measuring devices and blueprints, including close vision and depth perception.
  • Ability to safely operate material handling equipment such as forklifts or overhead cranes (if certified).
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment while maintaining accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with all company policies and procedures including Health, Safety and Quality Assurance
  • Report injuries, accidents, near misses or unsafe conditions to a supervisor or Manager immediately.
  • Set up and operate power saws (wet, band or circular) to cut material to required lengths or contour in accordance with specifications.
  • Install saw blades prescribed for type of material, set stop gauges, saw speeds and indexing mechanisms. such as may be provided for automatic positing of materials.
  • Review Work Orders, Drawings, and ITP specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of part/product, sequence of operations and/or set up requirements.
  • Verify conformance of finished part to ensure that it meets specifications.
  • Monitor product for any possible defects and report to supervisor and QC.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance at the station as required.
  • Maintains equipment and ensures work area is clean and safe at all times.
  • Able to read and follow work orders.
  • Able to use required measuring instruments.
