About The Position

The QMED is responsible for the efficient operation of the Engine Room of the vessel. This role involves making rounds, monitoring operating equipment, and performing maintenance and repairs as directed. The QMED will also be responsible for understanding and operating various systems, including water tanks, and assisting with the transfer of supplies. A thorough knowledge of safety procedures, environmental laws, and pollution abatement equipment is essential. This position may require performing other related duties to meet the ongoing needs of the organization and vessel.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Must be a valid United States citizen of at least 18 years of age.
  • United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC), with a minimum of ten (10) months remaining before expiration date.
  • Must be capable of carrying items up to 40 pounds and on heavier items must seek assistance of other workers or weight lifting devices.
  • Must be capable of wearing cumbersome PPE for Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) operations.
  • Must be able to communicate using the English language.
  • Must possess basic computer skills.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Government Top Secret Security Clearance
  • STCW Basic
  • Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)

  • Working knowledge of advanced software applications is preferred
  • Preference will be given to Calista shareholders and their descendants and to spouses of Calista shareholders, and to shareholders of other corporations created pursuant to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, in accordance with Title 43 U.S. Code 1626(g).

Responsibilities

  • Works directly under the supervision of the licensed watch engineer or the First Assistant Engineer if is a day worker.
  • Responsible for making rounds of the engine room and outside spaces while on duty recording all plant temperatures, pressures, fuel meters, water meters, and revolution counters as designated by the engine room log book.
  • Duties will include standing watch on the main propulsion plant, monitoring operating equipment, and making rounds at a frequency designated by the ship’s standing orders.
  • Will stand watches designated by the Chief Engineer.
  • Reports all abnormal conditions directly to the engineer on watch.
  • The Unlicensed Junior Engineer will take tank soundings, test water, and operate reverse osmosis units to fill various water tanks as required.
  • Stands by main throttle while maneuvering and assist the watch engineer with answering bells from the bridge.
  • Performs various maintenance and repair work as directed by the watch engineer or First Assistant Engineer or designate officer.
  • Assists in the taking-on and off-loading of fresh water, lube oil, fuel oil, and connecting and disconnecting all shore services.
  • Knows the locations of all firefighting, damage control and rescue equipment in the engineering spaces.
  • Possesses knowledge of the locations and how to operate all emergency remote shut down devices.
  • Will have a thorough knowledge of all casualty control procedures, main space fire doctrine, and rescue procedures.
  • Possesses knowledge of all environmental protection and pollution laws.
  • Possesses a thorough knowledge in the operation of all pollution abatement equipment.
