About The Position

The QMED (Qualified Member of the Engine Department) plays a critical role in the operation and maintenance of a vessel's engine room and associated machinery. This position ensures the safe and efficient functioning of all mechanical and electrical equipment onboard, contributing directly to the vessel's overall performance and safety. The QMED is responsible for routine inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs, working closely with the engineering team to prevent equipment failures and minimize downtime. This role demands a strong understanding of marine engineering principles, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance to maintain operational standards. Ultimately, the QMED supports the vessel’s mission by maintaining propulsion, auxiliary systems, and other critical machinery in optimal condition throughout voyages.

Requirements

  • Valid QMED certification issued by the United States Coast Guard (USCG).
  • Rating Forming Part of an Engineering Watch
  • Valid USCG Medical Certificate
  • Basic knowledge of marine engine room operations and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor in confined spaces and under varying environmental conditions.
  • Strong commitment to safety and adherence to maritime regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on commercial vessels or in a similar marine engineering role.

  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure during emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily inspections and maintenance of engine room machinery, including engines, pumps, compressors, and generators.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and electrical equipment to ensure continuous operation.
  • Monitor engine room conditions and report any abnormalities or safety hazards to senior engineering staff.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections in compliance with maritime regulations.
  • Participate in safety drills and adhere to all safety and environmental protocols onboard the vessel.
