About The Position

The QC Lab Technician will monitor product quality to ensure compliance with standards and specifications. This role involves developing an understanding of coatings technology, compiling test results, and conducting experiments using standard paint test procedures and physical/chemical techniques. The technician will also conduct chemical and physical laboratory tests to assist scientists, document experimental results, and maintain a safe work environment. Responsibilities include preparing paint batches, following standardized or experimental formulas, and performing lab support activities such as routine maintenance of equipment like salt fogs, QUV’S, milling rooms, hot rooms, or controlled temperature and humidity cabinets. The position also involves managing hazardous waste accumulation, including cleaning and filling tanks, disposing of waste materials, and ensuring proper labeling and storage of hazardous waste containers.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent (GED) with a focus in the sciences, with chemistry and related sciences preferred.
  • Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Using scientific rules and methods to solve problems.
  • Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Using mathematics to solve problems.
  • Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.

  • Knowledge of procedures for using facility emergency equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor product quality to ensure compliance to standards and specifications.
  • Develop an understanding of the fundamentals of coatings technology.
  • Compile results of tests and analyses.
  • Set up and conduct experiments, tests, and analyses using standard paint test procedures and physical and chemical techniques.
  • Conduct chemical and physical laboratory tests to assist scientists in making qualitative and quantitative analyses of solids, liquids, and gaseous materials, and document all experimental results.
  • Provide and maintain a safe work environment by participating in safety programs, committees, or teams, and by conducting laboratory and plant safety audits.
  • Prepare paint batches for products and following standardized formulas, or create experimental formulas.
  • Perform lab support activities which may include routine maintenance or upkeep of equipment and lab areas such as salt fogs, QUV’S, milling room, hot room, or controlled temp. & humidity cabinet.
  • Communicate with Supervisors, peers, or subordinates: provide information to supervisors and co-workers in written form or in person.
  • Maintain a good record of attendance and punctuality.
  • Learn all manual tasks performed within the department.
  • Perform tasks assigned using specific operating procedures and following department specific quality control processes and procedures.

  • Adhere to Rust-Oleum Corporation Quality principles and participate in all departmental and company-wide Quality activities.
  • Follow all safety procedures and company policies.
  • Dispose of product samples, line flush, off-spec product, or expired product retain samples.
  • Clean equipment and tanks pre-rinse, wipe, scrub, and final rinse surfaces using wash solvent, brushes and rags.
  • Transfer used wash solvent to the satellite accumulation drum or tank.
  • Ensure hazardous waste storage or accumulation containers remain sealed except during the addition or removal of waste.
  • Ensure Hazardous Waste storage containers are clearly labeled “Hazardous Waste.”
  • Exercise care when introducing waste into the satellite accumulation drum, and clean up any spilled material immediately.
  • Move the satellite accumulation container to a permanent hazardous waste storage area within 3 days and relabel it “Hazardous Waste” when 55 gallons has accumulated.
