About The Position

The QA In-House Investigator ensures compliance with National Association of Medical Examiner’s (NAME) accreditation standards, state law, county and departmental policies in addition to providing supervision for the clerk and funeral home liaison(s). This highly cross-trained position will add surge capacity by providing simultaneous scene coverage during business hours, performing clerk duties when needed, and by taking over the phone release cases when the on duty medicolegal investigator (MLI) is called away from the office on service calls.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or college in a related field; plus two years experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal need for direct supervision.
  • Ability to communicate with family members, medical providers, law enforcement, and other professional agencies regarding recently deceased individuals.
  • Ability to interpret, comprehend, and transmit complicated and detailed instructions accurately.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of workflow.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in grammar and spelling skills, medical terminology and web-based applications and other software as required by the department.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work the required hours of the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience as a medical examiner investigator and/or professional medical experience, preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of investigative experience, preferred.
  • Leadership experience, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees work of the Funeral Home liaison(s) to established standards and protocols.
  • Oversees work of the department Clerk to established standards and protocols.
  • Review case reports from the previous day for accuracy and provide investigator feedback.
  • Ensures the correctness of data entry into the State Vital Records System (SVRIS).
  • Ensures investigative documentation meets NAME standards.
  • Ensures compliance with state medical examiner law.
  • Ensures compliance with departmental and county policies.
  • Assists the Chief Medical examiner with preparation of the annual report.
  • Work closely with the forensic pathologists and MLIs to ensure the Office of the Medical Examiner receives all pertinent investigative information.
  • Ensure that all pertinent investigative information regarding medical examiner cases is entered in the appropriate location of the medical examiner database.
  • Confer with law enforcement, hospitals, and mortuary officials to obtain dental records, fingerprints, X-rays, or additional specimens as necessary to identify bodies.
  • Locate next-of-kin and notify of medical examiner involvement; advise family members of circumstances and causes of deaths and of processes and procedures of the medical examiner's office.
  • Execute the responsibilities of the department clerk as needed.
  • Conduct over-the-phone release investigations when the on-duty MLI is unavailable.
  • Carry out scene investigations during business hours when multiple calls for service are received simultaneously.
  • Performs related functions as assigned.
