About The Position

Bonterra exists to propel every doer of good to their peak impact. We measure that impact against our vision to increase the giving rate as a percentage of GDP from 2% to 3% by 2033. We know that this goal is lofty, but we are confident that the right technology and expertise will strengthen trust in the sector, allowing the social good industry to accelerate growth and reach peak impact. Bonterra's differentiated, end-to-end solutions collectively support a unique network of over 20,000 customers, including over 16,000 nonprofit organizations and over 50 percent of Fortune 100 companies. Learn more at bonterratech.com. Who You Are Are you passionate about quality and driven to ship software that works reliably at scale? Do you reach for automation before you reach for a test script? Is your first instinct when a bug lands to write a test that would have caught it? You're an automation-first QA Engineer who approaches testing as an engineering discipline. Automation isn't a goal you work toward — it's the default approach for repeatable validation. You understand when testing belongs at the UI, API, or integration level, and you build reliable, maintainable automation that provides fast and meaningful feedback to the development team. Manual testing still has an important place, but you use it intentionally for exploratory testing, usability validation, and one-time scenarios where automation provides limited value. Everything repeatable should be automated. You write test code with the same discipline you bring to production code: code reviews, refactoring, reusability, reliability, and maintainability. When an automated test fails, you investigate it rather than simply reporting it, working to determine whether the issue is in the product, test, environment, or data. Bonterra is seeking a QA Engineer – Automation to join our Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) engineering team. ETO is one of Bonterra's flagship products — a large-scale enterprise platform used by nonprofit organizations and public agencies to measure, manage, and improve program outcomes. You'll work closely with Software Engineers, Product Management, and Customer Success to validate new features, expand automated coverage, improve test reliability, and ensure high-quality releases for clients who depend on ETO every day.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in QA Engineering, Software Development in Test (SDET), or test automation for web applications, with a demonstrated history of building and maintaining automated test suites.
  • Strong Playwright experience, with the ability to build and extend a production-grade Playwright suite from day one.
  • Strong programming fundamentals, including the ability to write maintainable TypeScript test automation and comfortably read and understand application code.
  • Experience testing REST APIs, including Swagger/OpenAPI-documented endpoints.
  • Experience designing tests across UI, API, and integration layers and understanding when each approach is appropriate.
  • Understanding of test automation architecture and best practices, including test isolation, reusable components, test data management, assertions, parallel execution, and maintainability.
  • Experience with Git and pull-request-based development workflows, including participating in code reviews.
  • Experience with CI/CD practices and running automated tests as part of a development pipeline.
  • Experience using SQL or relational databases to validate data and troubleshoot application behavior.
  • Experience with test management and issue tracking tools such as TestRail, Jira, or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of functional, regression, integration, smoke, and exploratory testing methodologies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate complex failures, reproduce issues reliably, and determine root causes.
  • Experience working in Agile environments, including Scrum or Kanban.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical findings, quality risks, and coverage gaps to non-technical stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing or maintaining large-scale automated test frameworks.
  • Experience with TypeScript and Node.js beyond test automation.
  • Familiarity with AWS, particularly services such as S3 and CloudWatch, as they relate to validating file storage, application behavior, and logging.
  • Experience testing enterprise applications with complex business workflows and integrations.
  • Experience with API-first or service-level testing strategies that reduce reliance on UI automation.
  • Experience with test reporting, quality metrics, or other approaches for measuring automation effectiveness.
  • Familiarity with performance, accessibility, or security testing practices.
  • Passion for building technology that supports nonprofit organizations and social impact.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain automated tests for new features, bug fixes, and regression scenarios, prioritizing repeatable validation over recurring manual execution.
  • Own and evolve the automated test suite as a production-quality codebase, applying sound engineering practices such as reusable components, refactoring, code reviews, and reliable test design.
  • Help shape the team's test strategy and architecture, selecting the appropriate level of testing — UI, API, or integration — based on risk, coverage, maintainability, and execution speed.
  • Build API and integration tests to validate business logic beyond the UI, including request/response validation, authentication and authorization, error handling, and data integrity.
  • Participate in design and code reviews with a testability lens, identifying requirements or technical designs that may be difficult to validate and advocating for solutions that make software easier to test.
  • Investigate automated test failures and identify root causes, distinguishing between product defects, test defects, environmental issues, and test-data problems.
  • Identify and eliminate flaky tests, improving the reliability and trustworthiness of the automated test suite rather than routinely ignoring or disabling unstable tests.
  • Identify and close coverage gaps based on product risk, business requirements, and customer impact.
  • Validate features, defects, and releases through functional, regression, integration, and exploratory testing, including scenarios based on real customer workflows.
  • Use SQL and other diagnostic tools to validate data and troubleshoot application behavior when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Software Engineers and Product Management to understand business requirements and translate them into clear, maintainable, and executable automated tests.
  • Integrate automated testing into the development workflow so tests provide fast feedback during development and release processes.
  • Communicate quality risks, coverage, test results, and release readiness clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Continuously improve QA practices, tooling, and processes across the ETO engineering team.
