About The Position

The Next Gen Risk Ecosystem (NGRE) initiative is focused on advancing PayPal's risk systems to strengthen platform trust, drive sustainable growth, and maintain a competitive edge through modernization and innovation. Key Challenges Addressed: Increasing fraud complexity and pressure, Fragmented and outdated defense systems, Legacy infrastructure limiting agility and scalability. The mission is to modernize risk defenses using AI/ML-driven automation, modular platforms, and unified data and decision layers, enabling seamless risk intelligence across Venmo, Xoom, and Braintree ecosystems. We are seeking a Java Developer to join the Partnership Risk Engineering team. This role is ideal for a hands-on engineer passionate about scalable system design, cloud-native development, and intelligent automation. We are seeking an experienced Backend Software Engineer with strong hands-on development experience in both Java and Python. This role will focus on designing, building, and supporting scalable backend applications, APIs, microservices, and distributed systems. The ideal candidate is a true backend engineer who has used Java and Python in production environments and is comfortable working across both technology stacks.

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend software development experience.
• Strong hands-on professional development experience with Java AND Python.
• Strong Java experience with Spring Boot, Spring Framework, REST APIs, and microservices.
• Strong Python development experience building backend applications, services, APIs, or data-processing solutions.
• Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and distributed systems.
• Experience with SQL and relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle.
• Experience with Git and modern software development practices.
• Experience writing unit and integration tests.
• Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and software design principles.
• Experience troubleshooting and optimizing production backend applications.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with Kafka or other event-driven/messaging technologies.
• Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, DynamoDB, or Cassandra.
• Experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI.
• Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum engineering environments.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable backend applications and services using Java and Python.
• Build and enhance RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed backend systems.
• Develop production-quality Java applications using Spring Boot/Spring Framework.
• Develop backend services, automation, APIs, and data-processing components using Python.
• Work with relational and NoSQL databases to design efficient data models and queries.
• Integrate backend services with internal systems, third-party APIs, and cloud-based platforms.
• Troubleshoot performance, scalability, and production issues.
• Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code and participate in code reviews.
• Collaborate with engineering, architecture, DevOps, product, and QA teams throughout the development lifecycle.
• Support CI/CD pipelines, containerized environments, and cloud deployments.
