About The Position

The Pulmonary Lab Respiratory Therapist performs a variety of pulmonary diagnostic tests and blood gas analysis to aid physicians in monitoring, diagnosis, and/or treatment of patients with pulmonary or related disorders as deemed appropriate by the physician. Able to perform the regular duties of a staff Respiratory Therapist when required.

Requirements

  • Associate degree required.
  • Must be a Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapist and hold a current Connecticut State License.
  • BLS certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification and/or Registration as a Pulmonary Technologist by the NBRC preferred.
  • One year of previous experience in pulmonary diagnostics is desired.
  • Some computer skills are also desired.
  • Tobacco Treatment Specialty credentialing preferred.
  • ACLS & PALS certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs blood gas analysis on patient samples according to laboratory standards and reports these results to patient units or physicians utilizing the hospital information system and departmental policy.
  • Performs pulmonary function tests on patients and reports preliminary results to physician. Coaches patients to obtain the best possible results and always comments on patient effort.
  • Performs other pulmonary diagnostic procedures as requested by a physician, such as Exercise testing, Metabolic testing, Walking oximetry, Arterial Blood Gas draws, and HAST testing.
  • Performs pulmonary function testing responsibilities at multiple hospital locations including the main hospital, Tully Health Center, and the Medical Office Building.
  • Maintains and calibrates pulmonary function testing equipment and blood gas equipment according to the American Thoracic Society and CLIA standards.
  • Processes charges for tests, verifies charge reports, sends final reports, and files lab records.
  • Assists physicians during bronchoscopy procedures including EBUS, CRYO, and Navigational bronchoscopies.
  • Schedules outpatient and inpatient pulmonary tests with patients, physician offices and other hospital units with careful attention to obtaining all required information.
  • Demonstrates competency in all aspects of Respiratory Therapy pertaining to patient care and treatment. Has the ability to function and fill in as assigned as a staff Respiratory Therapist including routine oxygen and aerosol therapy as well as full ventilatory support and airway care. This may also include duties and responsibilities in Pulmonary Rehabilitation as deemed necessary and appropriate.
