Serves as a member of the critical care team by assisting in the management of critically ill patients in the hospital. Applies specialized skills and knowledge related to all ICU settings in which they practice. Contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and consulting, and provides leadership to the organization. This role involves direct clinical services for critically ill adult patients, obtaining health histories, performing physical examinations, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and performing therapeutic procedures. The position also includes airway management, insertion and management of various catheters and tubes, and patient assessment. The role supports clinical research, participates in quality improvement activities, and serves as a clinical expert and education consultant. Specific to Medical/Surgical Critical Care, responsibilities include airway management (including intubation and RSI medications), completion of a Difficult Airway Course, ACLS certification, interpretation of various diagnostic tests (ABGs, CXRs, ultrasounds, CTs of the chest), performing daily rounds, managing new consults, admissions, discharges, and advanced care planning. The role also involves attending multidisciplinary rounds, hospital committees, the Critical Care Center of Excellence, journal club, and grand rounds. The individual will formulate differential diagnoses, assessments, and plans, serve in the on-call pool, collaborate with other consultants and staff, maintain CME hours and licensure, and participate in the education of new hires and fellows. Prompt email response and attendance at staff meetings are also expected. Maintaining procedural skills is also a requirement.
