About The Position

The City of Buda is hiring for a Public Works Technician position. Placement within the Public Works Technician career progression (I, II, or III) and starting pay will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and certifications. The Public Works Technician in the Right-of-Way (ROW) division is responsible for performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, construction, and landscaping activities within the City’s public rights-of-way to support safe transportation corridors, protect public infrastructure, maintain community appearance standards, and ensure compliance with applicable regulations. The Public Works Technician for ROW operates equipment, utilizes tools and materials, and performs preventative maintenance activities to preserve City assets and provide reliable services to residents, visitors, and internal departments. This position participates in emergency response operations and may be required to work overtime, weekends, holidays, or on-call assignments as necessary to support City operations and emergency management activities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a valid Texas driver’s license within 90 days of employment.
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record and be insurable under the City’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Knowledge of right-of-way maintenance principles, methods, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of traffic control standards and work zone safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of equipment, tools, materials, and safety procedures used in public works operations.
  • Knowledge of vegetation management, drainage maintenance, and grounds maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable City policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of basic recordkeeping and documentation practices.
  • Skill in operating vehicles, equipment, machinery, and tools used in right-of-way maintenance activities.
  • Skill in performing maintenance, repair, landscaping, and construction-related tasks.
  • Skill in inspecting equipment and performing routine preventative maintenance.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining safe work zones.
  • Skill in communicating professionally and effectively with coworkers and the public.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to identify maintenance needs and determine appropriate corrective actions.

Nice To Haves

  • Public Works Technician I: six (6) months of related work experience.
  • Public Works Technician II: three (3) years of related work experience and at least two approved certifications/licenses or five (5) years of related work experience.
  • Public Works Technician III: seven (7) years of related work experience and at least three approved certifications/licenses or ten (10) years of related work experience.
  • Employees are encouraged to obtain approved certifications that support Public Works operations. Approved certifications may qualify employees for specialized assignments, advancement within the Public Works Technician career progression, pay adjustments within the established pay range, and certification incentive pay as approved by the City.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains public rights-of-way, medians, drainage easements, and related City property by mowing, edging, trimming vegetation, removing litter, applying herbicides, planting vegetation, and performing landscape maintenance to promote public safety, visibility, accessibility, and community appearance standards.
  • Performs maintenance, repair, and construction activities on rights-of-way infrastructure by utilizing hand tools, power tools, equipment, and construction materials to preserve City assets and ensure safe public use.
  • Inspects assigned work areas and identifies maintenance needs, hazards, damaged infrastructure, drainage concerns, or vegetation issues to support timely corrective action and prevent deterioration of public facilities.
  • Operates vehicles, trailers, tractors, mowers, utility equipment, power tools, and other assigned equipment in accordance with safety procedures to complete maintenance projects efficiently and safely.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance on vehicles, equipment, and tools by cleaning, lubricating, inspecting, servicing, and reporting deficiencies to maximize operational readiness and extend equipment life.
  • Assists with vegetation management activities, including tree trimming, brush removal, herbicide application, and invasive vegetation control to maintain roadway visibility, drainage function, and pedestrian accessibility.
  • Supports drainage maintenance operations by removing debris, excavating material, maintaining ditches and culverts, and restoring drainage pathways to reduce flooding risks and protect public infrastructure.
  • Establishes and maintains temporary traffic control measures, including signage, barricades, cones, and warning devices, to protect employees, motorists, and pedestrians during maintenance and construction activities.
  • Maintains work records, equipment logs, inspection reports, and related documentation to support operational accountability, regulatory compliance, and asset management efforts.
  • Responds to citizen concerns and service requests in a professional manner by providing information, identifying maintenance issues, and coordinating solutions to support high-quality customer service.
  • Assists other Public Works divisions and City departments with maintenance projects, special events, operational needs, and City initiatives to support efficient delivery of municipal services.
  • Participates in emergency response and disaster recovery operations, including traffic control, debris removal, facility protection, sandbagging, emergency repairs, and other emergency management activities to protect public safety and restore essential services.
  • Complies with all City policies, departmental procedures, safety standards, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations to promote a safe and productive work environment.
