About The Position

The City of Colonial Heights is hiring a Public Works Technician I. The position constructs, maintains, and repairs streets, roadways, drainage systems, storm sewers, water and wastewater lines, and other facilities. The City provides employees the opportunity to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement, including course enrollment, on-the-job training, and the final DMV test. Employees who obtain this license may be eligible for promotion to Public Works Technician II. The position requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, including frequent climbing, lifting objects weighing more than 74 pounds, and working in areas that are difficult or dangerous to access. The work environment involves high risks and exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress requiring safety precautions.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
One to less than three years of directly related experience.
Ability to obtain and maintain required licenses as deemed necessary within the specified period.
Valid Virginia driver’s license.
Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening and criminal background check.

Nice To Haves

A Commercial Driver’s License is desirable.

Responsibilities

Construct, maintain, and repair streets, roadways, drainage systems, storm sewers, water and wastewater lines, and other facilities.
Remove debris and blockages from streets and roadways.
Operate equipment and vehicles.
Establish traffic safety zones while working.
Replace existing meters and install meters on new accounts.
Stock crew trucks with supplies.
Clear trees and cut grass as necessary.
Perform vegetation management, landscaping, street repairs, concrete repairs, and utility repairs.
Perform leaf, snow, and ice removal.
Address public inquiries.
Perform other duties as assigned.
