About The Position

Positions assigned to this class perform a variety of entry level construction and maintenance related service activities in the department of Public Works. Essential Duties The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may no change, specific work tasks may vary over time depending on the City's needs.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED and one (1) year of paid full-time experience in street maintenance and repair, or construction work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Candidates who are appointed will be required to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a vehicle in Arizona, or meet the transportation needs of the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Must obtain an Arizona Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement within one year of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and clear or clean debris from parking lots, walkways, ditches, alleys, streets and storm drains.
  • Manage plant growth in and near roadways and medians.
  • Inspect and clear obstructions from roadways and storm drains; perform work in emergency situations as required
  • Place street barricades and cones prior to the performance of repair activities; direct traffic around work sites; utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed; alert others to any dangerous situations.
  • Shovel and spread asphalt and asphalt base or other street surface materials used in patching, repairing and reconstructing streets.
  • Read and interpret basic maps and blueprints.
  • Operate various equipment such as pick-up trucks, saws, small tools, power tools, plotters, concrete mixers and weed eaters.
  • Assist in performing basic construction, maintenance and repair work involving concrete, drainage structures, retaining walls, pipe lines, masonry, grading, pavers, metal work, wood work, fencing, and irrigation.
  • Assist in painting and striping City streets and curbs; install City signposts, signs and pavement markers.
  • May assist with the design, fabrication, installation and maintenance of quality traffic signs.
  • May assist with dead animal removal.
  • Support the City’s policies, goals and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives; ensure compliance with safety procedures.
