About The Position

ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation is looking for a full-time Public Works / Maintenance Worker to join our team. Reporting to the Facilities or Public Works Managers, this position will ensure that all AFN property is well maintained and kept in a high standard of repair, cleanliness, and sanitation and will perform duties related to the maintenance of grounds, equipment and the exterior and interior of AFN facilities, grounds, rental homes, and assets. This position supports the long-term care and upkeep of all facilities and collaborates closely with contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders to maintain high standards in maintenance practices, safety compliance, and community service. ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation (″AFN″) is a member Community of the Ktunaxa Nation. ʔAFN exists for the Community. Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of experience in facilities maintenance, building operations, or related field.
• Strong knowledge of basic repair and maintenance practices across multiple trades (carpentry, mechanical, plumbing, electrical).
• Strong attention to detail in all maintenance practices.
• Experience operating and transporting skid steer, mini excavator, power tools and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
• Understanding of occupational health and safety requirements, fire codes, and building standards.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
• Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting, carrying, and operating equipment.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license required plus clean driver’s abstract.
• Respectful and discreet demeanor when supporting sensitive cultural or ceremonial activities.
• Strong communication skills, specifically verbal and listening.
• Customer service skills when working with Nation members.

Nice To Haves

• Additional certifications (e.g., WHMIS, First Aid, Fall Protection, Cargo Securement, Skid steer/Mini Ex certification) considered assets.
• Experience working with First Nations / Indigenous communities is an asset.
• Knowledge of language, history and culture of the Ktunaxa Nation is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Ensuring the grounds are clean and free from garbage and debris.
• Ensure that walkways are clear of debris/snow removal and the spreading of ice melt daily before staff and clients arrive.
• Ensuring the lawns and areas of greenery are watered when necessary.
• Pruning shrubs, trimming bushes, and adding fertilizer to maintain growth as well as weed control.
• Cutting grass regularly.
• Spraying trees and plants to protect them from insects and diseases.
• Landscaping, leaf blowing, paving stone repair.
• Woodwork repair, boardwalks, benches.
• Gutter cleaning, drain clearing. Some work on roofs if required.
• Sweeping, pressure washing, waste removal and other general cleaning as required.
• Conduct preventative maintenance on buildings, homes, equipment, and fleet vehicles.
• Trail maintenance as required and general landscaping.
• Execute current resource management plan under supervision.
• Chopping, cutting and delivering firewood to community members as needed and directed.
• Clean up of leaves and tree debris and maintenance of grounds free of debris.
• Assisting site maintenance and cleaning personnel when and if the need arises.
• Resident Services and assistance as required and maintaining good resident relations.
• Assist with facility logistics during community burial ceremonies.
• Secure facilities after hours and support pest control measures.
• Assisting with the implementation of preventative maintenance programs.
• Maintenance of yard and parking lot.
• Contribute to controlled burn programs, under the instruction of supervisor.
• Other duties relating to upkeep of buildings and grounds as assigned
• Use machinery with small engines, pressure washers, mowers, leaf blowers & hand tools such as drills, saws and clippers.
• Ensure equipment fluid levels are checked on a daily basis along with all guards, etc in a proper and complete circle check.
• Maintain tools and equipment.
• Move infrastructure as required (e.g., building tipis, moving firewood, hauling equipment, manual labour, office furniture setup and moving, etc.)
• Limited administrative duties: report to Manager any issues, maintain maintenance records of groundskeeping equipment, submit receipts, keep records of problematic issues and maintenance performed, may be required to create maintenance schedule, and other duties within this scope.
• Assist in the setup, takedown, and execution of large events.
• Ensure excellence in the stewardship of all resource.
• Strictly follow all OH&S, WorkSafe BC and hazardous materials instructions.

• Starting salary between $23 and $27 /hour, depending on experience
