About The Position

This is a promotional opportunity for current City of Loma Linda employees, specifically within the Streets Division. The Public Works Maintenance Worker II performs a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, or repair of City streets, water systems, related facilities, and equipment. This role is distinguished from the Public Works Maintenance Worker I by its higher knowledge and skill level, and the responsibility for directing the work of others on a project basis. The position works under general supervision.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Two years of varied parks, landscape, medians, building and facilities, streets, or general maintenance work involving the use of a variety of tools and equipment.
  • Possession of a valid California Class B driver license is required at the time of appointment, or must be obtained within twelve (12) months of appointment.
  • Ability to operate light and heavier motorized equipment and small power and hand tools in performing maintenance work on a regular basis, including backhoes, boom trucks, or specialized tools and equipment required to complete tasks.
  • Ability to safely operate jackhammer, concrete saw, or other mobile power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform assigned maintenance tasks following established procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to follow proper safety rules and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, management, and the general public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to complete basic work activity records and time reports.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to use written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience within a specific field related to the position assignment is highly desirable.
  • A water tanker endorsement may also be required within one (1) year of appointment.
  • May be required to respond to emergency calls or set up for special events after normal working hours, including nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled work in the construction, maintenance, or repair of City streets, grounds, and landscaped areas, and related facilities and equipment.
  • Operates or directs the operation of light to heavy power-driven equipment for assigned tasks.
  • Tasks may include construction, repair, or maintenance of City streets, street lighting, and storm drain systems; trimming and removal of street trees; grounds and landscaped areas; and related facilities and equipment.
  • Performs or directs the maintenance or repair of Division facilities and equipment.
  • When assigned, directs the work of others involved in related construction, maintenance, or repair activity, providing instruction in work performance according to safe work practices.
  • Responds to calls when off duty.
  • Prepares street surfaces for paving or reconstruction work; breaks up asphalt, concrete, or hardened surfaces using a jackhammer, concrete saw, shovel, or pick.
  • Seals cracks and patches streets; rakes, smooths, and levels asphalt and concrete mix using shovels, rakes, and small hand tools.
  • Identifies areas to be repaired and the level of mix to be used; applies asphalt, concrete, and pre-mix materials to streets, sidewalks, and pedestrian ways; uses levels or visual guides to confirm proper temperature conditions and level of mix.
  • Constructs and lays forms for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and performs concrete finishing work using finishing tools.
  • Operates larger and smaller rollers to smooth asphalt or patch trucks for asphalt and slurry work in small areas; operates concrete grinders and saws.
  • Cleans and repairs drains, gutters, mains, and laterals, and clears drainage areas; operates a dump truck or larger vehicles to move debris.
  • Identifies, responds to, troubleshoots, and repairs traffic signal system problems.
  • Makes and installs street signs; maintains, cleans, and repairs traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings.
  • Waters and fertilizes lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers, planted areas, parkways, and median strips; mows, rakes, and edges lawns; applies topical herbicides and pesticides.
  • Operates mowers, boom trucks, chippers, and other power-driven construction and repair equipment for various jobs.
  • Spades and prepares ground for planting; plants, trims, and prunes trees and shrubs; performs ground-level and elevated trimming and shaping of trees, hedges, shrubs, and other plant materials.
  • Picks up trash and debris in rights of way; cleans catch basins and storm drain channels.
  • Inspects playground equipment for safe operation and replaces parts as needed.
  • Works with pool crews to clean and maintain facilities.
  • Assists in repairing and replacing block walls, wooden fences, and chain link fences.
  • Prepares, lines, waters, drags, and renovates ball fields.
  • Operates sandblasting and graffiti removal equipment for the removal of graffiti.
