About The Position

The City of Galt is seeking a Public Works Maintenance Worker I/II for the Streets Division. This role involves performing semi-skilled work in the construction, modification, maintenance, repair, and operation of City infrastructure, including streets, traffic controls, street sweepers, storm and sanitary sewers, and water and wastewater systems. The position requires the use of various manual and power tools, as well as light to heavy power-driven equipment. The Public Works Maintenance Worker I is an entry-level position working under direct supervision, while the Public Works Maintenance Worker II is a journey-level position expected to perform duties independently with minimal supervision. Advancement between levels is possible based on experience and demonstrated ability. The recruitment may close once a sufficient number of applicants are received.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Public Works Maintenance Worker I: One (1) year of construction, maintenance, or repair experience in streets and traffic, municipal utilities, general construction, or facilities maintenance areas.
  • Public Works Maintenance Worker II: Three (3) years of semi-skilled construction, maintenance, or repair experience in streets and traffic, municipal utilities, general construction, or facilities maintenance areas, or two (2) years of experience equivalent to the Public Works Maintenance Worker I.
  • Knowledge of maintenance principles, practices, tools, and materials for maintaining and repairing water distribution systems, including water hydraulics, valves, pipe materials, and water service components.
  • Knowledge of basic principles, practices, tools, and materials as they relate to the maintenance and repair of infrastructure, facilities, systems, and appurtenances similar to those in a municipal environment.
  • Knowledge of basic traffic control procedures and traffic sign regulations.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Knowledge of basic computer software related to the work.
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service.
  • Knowledge of safe driving rules and practices.
  • Ability to perform semi-skilled construction, modification, maintenance, and repair work on City streets, water distribution and sewer collection systems, facilities, and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs semi-skilled work in the construction, modification, maintenance, repair, and operation of City infrastructure, including streets, traffic controls and structures, street sweepers, storm and sanitary sewers, and water and wastewater systems.
  • Uses and operates a variety of manual and power tools and light to heavy power-driven equipment.
  • Troubleshoots maintenance and repair problems, determines materials and equipment required for repair.
  • Operates specialized vehicles and a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment related to the maintenance and repair of the City’s infrastructure.
  • Inspects and performs service, minor maintenance, and repairs on a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Maintains logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
  • Contacts residents and businesses to inform them of work to be performed.
  • May assist with the training and direction of new or temporary staff.
  • Reports the need for major contract repair or maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Operates a standard vehicle to travel to multiple locations in order to perform assigned tasks.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies.
  • Performs repairs, maintenance, and construction of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, catch basins, and drainage structures.
  • Excavates and backfills excavations related to water and wastewater line repairs.
  • Loads cold and hot mix asphalt, and patching oil; applies and finishes patching and paving materials.
  • Uses an airless paint sprayer; mixes, thins, and applies paint and stripes streets, crosswalks, and stop sign bars; replaces reflective pavement markers and street signs; lays out and installs traffic signs.
  • Removes concrete, builds forms, and repairs sidewalks and gutters.
  • Performs street lighting repairs and complete USA requests (utility locating).
  • Provides installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signs, including making signs and installing sign posts and signs.
  • Participates in the fabrication and repair of City signs, including street name signs and sign posts.
  • Performs tree trimming and removal services.
  • Performs legend painting and striping of City streets and parking lots using appropriate materials.
  • Operates street sweeping equipment for the purpose of cleaning City streets.
  • Occasionally removes small amounts of debris from streets as necessary.
  • Receives and responds to requests for emergency clean-up, including requests to remove debris, garbage, glass, and other materials from accident sites and other areas.
  • Inspects equipment; performs preventive maintenance; makes operating adjustments and minor repairs to equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs water and sewer service connections.
  • Installs potable water pipe lines, fittings, valves, and fire hydrants; taps and repairs water service lines.
  • Maintains, repairs, and flushes underground water distribution lines and sanitary sewer collection systems.
  • Operates high-pressure hydro flushing unit and heavy construction equipment as qualified and assigned.
  • Determines the location of underground utilities and marks them accordingly.
  • Checks water and sewer plants and takes readings; and checks sewer lift stations and takes sewer meter readings.
  • Performs water meter maintenance, including installing new meters, testing and repairing meters of various sizes, repairing leaks, and replacing meters as necessary.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on wastewater treatment plants (pumps, waterlines, and equipment; and moves sludge).
  • Opens, flushes, patches, and installs sewer lines; builds and cleans out manholes, catch basins, and other drainage facilities.
  • Performs inspection, construction, maintenance, and repair activities of City sanitation systems and facilities.
  • Checks storm lift stations and takes storm meter readings.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on storm collection systems (pumps, pipes, drain inlet, and outlet).
  • Opens, flushes, patches, and installs storm lines; builds and cleans out manholes, catch basins, and other drainage facilities.
  • Performs inspection, construction, maintenance, and repair activities of City storm systems and facilities.
  • Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance of drainage structures to ensure efficient drainage.
  • Performs concrete and open channel maintenance, including inspecting and repairing stormwater conveyance systems, removing/abating weeds and other invasive vegetation, removing sediments, debris, and trash from channels.

Benefits

  • Longevity Pay - beginning at 10 years of service, 5%; 15 years of service, 7.5%.

  • Vacation Cash Out - Cash out up to forty (40) hours of vacation per year.
  • Sick Leave - 96 hours per year.
  • Health Insurance - City pays a generous portion of the CalPERS medical premium (9 options), City pays 100% for employee-only medical, dental, and vision premiums.
  • Life Insurance - City paid $50,000 policy and $1,500 policy for dependents.
  • Long Term Disability - City paid policy-benefit is up to 60% of base salary.
