About The Position

The City of Galt is accepting applications for Public Works Maintenance Worker I/II for the Utilities Division. This is an entry-level to journey-level position involving semi-skilled work in the construction, modification, maintenance, repair, and operation of City infrastructure, including streets, traffic controls, storm and sanitary sewers, and water and wastewater systems. The role requires the use of various tools and equipment, and may involve responding to emergencies and interacting with the public. The Public Works Maintenance Worker I is an entry-level position working under direct supervision, while the Public Works Maintenance Worker II is a journey-level position expected to perform duties independently. Positions are flexibly staffed, with advancement from I to II typically requiring additional experience and demonstrated ability.

Requirements

Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Public Works Maintenance Worker I: One (1) year of construction, maintenance, or repair experience in streets and traffic, municipal utilities, general construction, or facilities maintenance areas.
Public Works Maintenance Worker II: Three (3) years of semi-skilled construction, maintenance, or repair experience in streets and traffic, municipal utilities, general construction, or facilities maintenance areas, or two (2) years of experience equivalent to the Public Works Maintenance Worker I.
Knowledge of maintenance principles, practices, tools, and materials for maintaining and repairing water distribution systems, including water hydraulics, valves, pipe materials, and water service components.
Knowledge of basic principles, practices, tools, and materials as they relate to the maintenance and repair of infrastructure, facilities, systems, and appurtenances similar to those in a municipal environment.
Knowledge of basic traffic control procedures and traffic sign regulations.
Knowledge of basic mathematics.
Knowledge of basic computer software related to the work.
Knowledge of English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service.
Knowledge of safe driving rules and practices.
Ability to perform semi-skilled construction, modification, maintenance, and repair work on City streets, water distribution and sewer collection systems, facilities, and equipment.
Ability to troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine materials and supplies required for repair.

Responsibilities

Performs a variety of semi-skilled work in the construction, modification, maintenance, repair, and operation of City infrastructure, including streets, traffic controls and structures, street sweeper, storm and sanitary sewers, and water and wastewater systems.
Uses and operates a variety of manual and power tools and light to heavy power-driven equipment.
Troubleshoots maintenance and repair problems, determines materials and equipment required for repair.
Operates specialized vehicles and a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment related to the maintenance and repair of the City’s infrastructure.
Inspects and performs service, minor maintenance, and repairs on a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and equipment.
Maintains logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
Contacts residents and businesses to inform them of work to be performed.
May assist with the training and direction of new or temporary staff.
Reports the need for major contract repair or maintenance of facilities and equipment.
Operates a standard vehicle to travel to multiple locations in order to perform assigned tasks.
Responds to after-hours emergencies.
Installs, maintains, and repairs water and sewer service connections.
Installs potable water pipe lines, fittings, valves, and fire hydrants; taps and repairs water service lines.
Maintains, repairs, and flushes underground water distribution lines and storm and sanitary sewer collection systems; operates high-pressure hydro flushing unit and heavy construction equipment as qualified and assigned.
Determines the location of underground utilities and marks them accordingly.
Checks water and sewer plants and takes readings; and checks sewer lift stations and takes sewer meter readings.
Performs water meter maintenance, including installing new meters, testing and repairing meters of various sizes, repairing leaks, and replacing meters as necessary.
Performs maintenance and repairs on wastewater treatment plants (pumps, waterlines, and equipment; and moves sludge).
Opens, flushes, patches, and installs sewer lines; builds and cleans out manholes, catch basins, and other drainage facilities.
Performs inspection, construction, maintenance, and repair activities of City storm drain and sanitation systems and facilities.
Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance of drainage structures to ensure efficient drainage.
Performs concrete and open channel maintenance, including inspecting and repairing stormwater conveyance systems, removing/abating weeds and other invasive vegetation, removing sediments, debris, and trash from channels.
