About The Position

This recruitment is for a Public Works Crew Leader in the Streets Division. The role involves performing skilled work within the Public Works Department, operating various tools and equipment, and serving as a crew leader for a field crew. This is an advanced journey-level position responsible for the most technically complex tasks and leading a field crew. The position receives general supervision and exercises functional supervision over Maintenance Workers I and II.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of experience in parks and tree maintenance, streets and sanitation, or building maintenance.
  • Completion of high school or its equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Class C Driver's License issued from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Possession of a valid Class A Driver's License issued from the California Department of Motor Vehicles is required prior to the completion of one year of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Specialized training and/or experience in maintenance, construction, supervision, or management of employees in related fields is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled tasks relating to the installation, repair, and maintenance of sewer lines, streets and alleys, parks, irrigation systems, street lights, signs, street sweeping, weed abatement, concrete sidewalk, and concrete curb and gutter.
  • Operate various pneumatic, motorized, and hand tools and equipment for preparing and backfilling trenches; placing and maintaining water and sewer lines; street, alley, curb, and walkway construction and maintenance; park construction and maintenance; and asphalt skin patching and pothole repairs.
  • Install and perform field repairs on sprinkler systems, water and sewer systems, lift stations, gauges, and meters.
  • Perform skilled tasks in the placement of concrete and asphalt, street striping, and slurry sealing.
  • Assist in tree trimming, street sweeping, and horticultural activities.
  • May assist in the coordination of trash collection services.
  • Contact residents concerning maintenance and service problems and assist supervisory personnel in resolving these issues.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and maintain work records and documentation.
  • Regularly act as a leader of a work crew.
  • Oversee contractor services for performance and resolve any field-related issues.
  • Assist in instructing crew members on proper methods for construction, maintenance, repair, and safety activities.
  • May act as Public Works Supervisor in their absence.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
