About The Position

The City of Norwalk is seeking a skilled and self-motivated Public Worker II to join their Public Works team, with a primary focus on maintaining the City's facilities. This role involves solving problems, improving public buildings, and making a lasting impact on the community. The ideal candidate will have experience in HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general building maintenance, and will enjoy diagnosing issues, finding practical solutions, and taking initiative. While facility maintenance is the main focus, this position is part of a collaborative Public Works team and may assist with other tasks such as street repairs, snow removal, water main breaks, and other emergencies. The role requires someone who is organized, communicates effectively, and is willing to step in wherever needed. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in construction, equipment operation, or a related field.
  • Basic computer skills, including word processing.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Effective communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and maintain technical records.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with co-workers, vendors, and the public.
  • Frequent walking, standing, climbing, bending, kneeling, and reaching.
  • Regular lifting of up to 50 pounds; occasional lifting to 100 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and ability to use hand tools.
  • Ability to speak clearly and hear instructions in a variety of environments.
  • Visual requirements include depth perception, peripheral vision, and color differentiation.
  • Valid Iowa Driver’s License required.
  • Must obtain Iowa Class A Commercial Driver’s License with an air brake endorsement within six months of hire and maintain it throughout employment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and minor installations involving HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and building systems.
  • Perform routine inspections of City facilities, equipment, and building systems to identify maintenance needs, safety concerns, and opportunities for operational improvements.
  • Respond to facility maintenance emergencies and assist in resolving urgent building-related issues.
  • Maintain and repair streets, curbs, sidewalks, alleys, and related areas using asphalt and concrete.
  • Remove snow and ice from streets, sidewalks, and facilities.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair sanitary and storm sewer collection systems.
  • Operate equipment such as loaders, backhoes, skid steers, dump trucks, tractors, vac/jet trucks, and various hand tools.
  • Install and maintain traffic control devices, barricades, and signage.
  • Perform manual labor, including shoveling, raking, tamping, and debris removal.
  • Maintain, inspect, and repair the water distribution system, including pipes, hydrants, pumps, motors, and hydraulic components.
  • Clean and maintain tools, equipment, and work areas.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies, call-outs, and work assignments.
  • Maintain punctual attendance, a positive attitude, and effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
