An employee in this class performs a variety of tasks in the repair, maintenance and construction of public works infrastructure and facilities, and performs other related work as required. The employee operates large, complex equipment such as tracked loader, backhoe, tracked hydraulic excavator to perform operations such as excavating and backfilling, places heavy pipes and similar operations associated with construction and maintenance. Work involves responding to on-site customer complaints regarding water or sewer service; preparing daily records and reports for state inspections; performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment, requesting major repairs and servicing of equipment. The employee performs heavy physical activity doing snow removal, clean-up and maintenance activities for the water/sewer repair in emergency situations, and assists with water leaks and sewer problems. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and policies. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and normal hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as exposure to heat and cold. Work is performed under the supervision of the Water and Sewer Supervisor and is evaluated through daily observation, visual inspection and recordkeeping. This classification is considered non-exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
