About The Position

The Public Service Worker - Streets is responsible for all aspects of new and remodeling concrete construction, including concrete street maintenance, curb and gutter work, and ramp restoration. Is also responsible for the repair and maintenance of asphalt roadways, pathways, alleyways, and driveways, and also is responsible for maintenance of surface utilities such as manholes and gate valves. In addition, performs other public works duties, including snow removal and general maintenance. The duties and responsibilities of this job are performed with latitude for independent judgment in accordance with Department and City policies, Federal, State and Local regulations and are based on detailed knowledge of Department operations. Work is subject to periodic review by the supervisor, who provides input on and approval of recommendations, and discusses assignments, priorities, and work.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of experience in carpentry or concrete work, asphalt/paving work or road construction/maintenance work, or equivalent experience
  • Continuing education sufficient to progress as required under the Career Development Program (CDP)
  • Possess or obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License, with endorsements
  • Able to perform pre-trip Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections certification within six months of hire

Responsibilities

  • Performs all aspects of new and remodeling concrete and masonry construction.
  • Frames, forms and finishes concrete placement for sidewalks, walls, curbs and gutters, parking ramps, bridges and other roadway areas; Performs masonry work, including brick and block laying; Constructs retaining and sound walls; Welds and fabricates frames and forms;
  • Repairs and maintains asphalt roadways, pathways, alleyways, and driveways, and also maintains surface utilities such as manholes and gate valve covers.
  • Repairs and maintains roadways, including street sweeping, paving, patching, seal coating/crack filling, and installing overlays;
  • Performs repairs and maintenance of surface utilities, including manholes and gate valves;
  • Performs general carpentry and construction labor. Hangs and repairs doors and cabinets; Applies paint and stain; Installs sheetrock, wall, and ceiling tile.
  • Demonstrates the ability to set up a safe work zone on low volume roadways;
  • Diagnoses, evaluates and estimates construction and repair needs;
  • Researches, evaluates and recommends and/or makes purchases of supplies and materials.
  • Maintains trees and plantings, including planting, pruning and trimming trees, replacing plants as needed, and maintaining soil and mulch levels;
  • Repairs or installs grounds sprinkler and drain tile systems;
  • Repairs guardrails;
  • Performs minor repairs and maintenance of Department vehicles and equipment;
  • Operates City equipment and vehicles, including but not limited to, snow removal equipment, loaders, graders, rollers, stripers, and sweepers.
  • Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.
  • Communicates with others relating to work assignments and progress of work or to convey information about conditions or work related needs.
  • Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
