About The Position

The Arlington County Police Department (ACPD) is seeking motivated and service-minded Public Service Aides to join their team and serve a diverse and engaged community. Public Service Aides are permanent, full-time, non-sworn, uniformed personnel who provide community service through parking enforcement and support functions for sworn Police Officers. They are visible members of public safety within the community.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent.
  • Possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver’s license, and provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) State Operator Certification.
  • Ability to conduct work primarily outdoors in all types of weather including heavy rain, extreme heat and extreme cold.
  • Ability to walk several miles per day, often on feet walking or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to frequently operate motor vehicles.
  • Ability to bend over and lift parking boots weighing up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to carry, lift, and load stacks of traffic cones and barricades weighing up to 40 pounds per stack from beds of pick-up trucks and rapidly deploy them along the roadway.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable interacting with the public to provide information and services which may include diffusing tense interactions while enforcing parking regulations, and explaining County or State licensing requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in enforcing Virginia and Arlington County parking, traffic, and license regulations.
  • Customer service experience including responding to policy-related questions.

Responsibilities

  • Patrolling assigned areas and enforcing parking regulations, including meters, residential permit zones, and posted restrictions.
  • Verifying parking payments and permits and issuing citations or warnings for violations.
  • Responding to complaints regarding parking violations, blocked access, abandoned vehicles, and other parking-related concerns.
  • Documenting violations through accurate notes, photographs, citations, and reports.
  • Operating ticket citation devices, parking payment and permit systems, and other enforcement technologies.
  • Coordinating authorized vehicle removals and assisting with special events and traffic operations.
  • Explaining parking regulations and providing professional customer service to the public.
  • Preparing for administrative hearings and testifying in court regarding citations and enforcement actions.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
