About The Position

The City of Baldwin Park is hiring a Public Safety Trainee, an entry-level, non-sworn position with an excellent opportunity for a career in law enforcement. This role requires attending a 26-week California POST Basic Police Academy, followed by department-specific training covering the criminal justice system, laws, law enforcement techniques, first aid, physical fitness, and community policing. The position is designated as "at-will" and serves at the pleasure of the Police Chief. Upon successful completion of the academy and approval, trainees are eligible for appointment as a full-time Police Officer.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be at least 20.5 years of age at the time of application and 21 years of age by the time of graduation from the Police Academy.
  • Possess a valid California Class C Driver License.
  • Be a United States Citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Ability to meet California POST background standards and successfully pass the City's background investigation.
  • Proof of education must be submitted with the application.
  • Basic reading, writing, and spelling.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations.
  • Deal Constructively with conflict and develop effective resolutions.
  • Learn, understand, and interpret laws and regulations.
  • Use and care of firearms.

Nice To Haves

  • The City will accept PELLET-B scores from another agency if obtained within one (1) year (365 days) of the application submission date and have a minimum T-Score of 42.
  • The City will accept a passing PAT score from another agency if obtained within one (1) year of the application submission date and includes all five required testing components.

Responsibilities

  • Successfully attend and graduate from a P.O.S.T certified basic academy.
  • Learn use and care of firearms and related equipment.
  • Meet Police Officer requirements included in the California State Government Code.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
  • May be assigned non-sworn duties within the Police Department.
