Requirements

  • Completion of a standard high school course of study or the GED.
  • Ability to pass a standard critical testing procedure; must successfully complete the City of Hampton Public Safety Telecommunications Trainee program to include Call Taker, Fire and Police Telecommunications.
  • Will be required to successfully complete a Police Department background investigation to include a polygraph examination and pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
  • Must be able to successfully obtain an EMD/CPR certification within a specified length of time in accordance with internal guidelines and a VCIN certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
  • Incumbents are required to work in situations of extreme stress and in emergency, life threatening situations.
  • Extensive knowledge of and proficiency in the use of personal computers
  • Thorough knowledge of the city's geography
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctively over the radio
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and ability to give clear, concise feedback
  • Ability to develop and maintain harmonious working relationships and work effectively with diverse groups
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make appropriate decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Answering 911 emergency and non-emergency calls
  • Dispatching the appropriate emergency responders
  • Learning the vital skills needed to protect and serve
  • Provide credible testimony in court, to the magistrate and in other situations where credibility will be of importance.
