About The Position

The Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library Public Safety Department is seeking professional, customer-service-oriented individuals to join our Part-Time Weekend and Event Team. We are actively hiring officers who can work Fridays, Saturdays, and especially Sundays, with opportunities for additional hours during special events, evening programming, and holidays. Public Safety Officers protect Winterthur's guests, staff, collections, and 1,000-acre estate while serving as welcoming ambassadors for one of the nation's premier museums and gardens. This position offers a unique blend of security, public interaction, emergency response, and event support in a beautiful and historic setting. The Public Safety Officer helps ensure the safety and security of Winterthur's guests, staff, collections, and property while providing exceptional customer service. Officers respond to emergencies, assist with conflict resolution, enforce policies, and help create a safe and welcoming environment across the Winterthur campus. As one of the first employees many guests encounter, Public Safety Officers serve as ambassadors for Winterthur and are expected to demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and sound judgment at all times. Priority hiring for candidates available Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and special events. Availability for day, evening, and overnight shifts is required.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent with some customer service, safety, or law enforcement experience, or the ability to learn public safety duties quickly
The ability to talk to people in a friendly manner that gets results
A team orientation and willingness to collaborate
Flexible workdays/hours and ability to work with little notice
This position requires clear thinking during any situation that may arise with a calm and professional demeanor
Proficient oral and written communication skills
Basic computer skills, including word processing, accessing and managing a Winterthur-provided e-mail account, and navigating the internet
Ability to utilize computerized security and office systems after training
Valid driver’s license with no conviction for driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol within 3 years of application.
No convictions for theft or sexually related offenses
Must be able to work within the confines of the Museum or other Collection areas that require tight security and attention to detail
Must enjoy dealing with the public in a cultural property setting
Must be capable of performing CPR /First Aid after training
Must be able to climb multiple stairs; at least 9 floors
Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods of time; potentially 8 hours or more
Must be able to sit in and operate a SUV or Pickup type vehicle for an 8-hour shift
Must be able to lift 50+ pounds
Must be able to climb a ladder

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent, first aid certification, and 1+ years’ experience in a public safety-related field
CPR/First Aid certification is preferred. Without prior certification, must be able to pass a written and practical test after attending a training course as designated by Winterthur

Responsibilities

Respond to and investigate any incident involving the safety of staff, guests, assets, or property
Provide first aid and/or CPR in the event of a medical emergency and provide guidance and physical assistance in the event of an emergency evacuation.
Follow existing emergency procedures for evacuations due to any fire, flood emergency, or sudden and severe weather conditions that may arise
Exhibit strong customer service skills during any situation, including responding to inquiries from guests, visitors, and suppliers
Maintain vigilance for and take proactive steps to correct potentially hazardous situations
Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures governing people, vehicles, and property by all persons on Winterthur property
Monitor the security of Winterthur via computerized security systems
Galleries—monitor 1st and 2nd floor Galleries and respond to emergencies that arise
Motor Patrol—patrol Winterthur grounds and required buildings and respond to emergencies that arise, including assisting in the evacuation of Museum, Gallery, and Wing
Main Gate—screen entry when not open to the public; greet and direct first-time guests to Visitor Center; greet outside contractors and ensure proper direction or escort to destination; answer incoming calls and assist as necessary
Museum—Secure exterior doors as needed, respond to medical emergencies; respond, investigate, and complete written reports on injured guests and employees.
Evening & Night—walk Museum Wing, Gallery, and Research Building to monitor exterior doors and check for safety issues
