About The Position

The Public Safety Officer (Safety/Security Officer III) proactively patrols VHC Health facilities and property to maintain order, protect personnel, and prevent fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry. This role enforces VHC Health policies, provides assistance to patients, visitors, and employees, and responds to other security requirements of the VHC campus. The officer will respond to complaints of wrongdoing, prepare incident reports and activity logs, and respond to emergency alerts and situations on campus. Additionally, the Public Safety Officer (Safety/Security Officer III) will be required to complete advanced first aid training, including Basic Life Support (BLS) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Once trained, they will respond to medical emergencies to assess, stabilize, and arrange transport to the Emergency Department. The role also involves handling situations of violence, potentially requiring the use of physical force and defensive weapons up to and including deadly force, as well as non-clinical restraint devices like handcuffs. The officer must wear a specific uniform and protective clothing, including ballistic vests weighing over 10 lbs, body-worn cameras, and other duty gear. Physical fitness is essential, with the ability to stand and walk for up to 12 hours per shift, respond quickly to emergencies, and use physical force for self-defense, defense of others, or to detain persons for arrest.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Valid state driver's license and a clean driving record with constant insurability is required.
  • Minimum 1 year of VHC Safety/Security Officer II experience; or Two (2) years of unarmed Security Officer experience and 1 year of armed Security Officer or Law Enforcement Officer experience (VHC and outside experience can be combined).

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree is preferred.
  • Virginia DCJS Unarmed Security Officer License to be obtained within six months.
  • Adult and Child First Aid/CPR/AED to be obtained within six months.
  • Taser CEW, Expandable Baton, Handcuffing, and Defensive Tactics certifications to be obtained within six months.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), National Registry - Paramedic, or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Equivalent Clinical Technician or Emergency Medical Responder experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Uses non-clinical restraint devices, such as handcuffs.
  • Wears specific uniform and protective clothing, such as ballistic vests that weigh over 10 lbs, in addition to wearing body-worn cameras and other required duty gear.
  • Maintains physical fitness and the ability to stand and/or walk up to 12 hours per shift.
  • Is physically able to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Is able to use physical force to defend themselves or others, or to detain persons for arrest.
