About The Position

To direct staff engaged in campus and special event security, and perform related work. Campus Security Authority: This position is identified as a “Campus Security Authority (CSA)” per the federal law known as the Clery Act. Per this law, the employee is required to report any crimes that he/she becomes aware of to the Clery Compliance Officer. Additionally, CSAs are required to complete annual training prescribed by the Clery Compliance Officer. Variable Shift schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Shift pay may be available for qualifying shift assignments. Department Overview: Boise State University’s Department of Public Safety is responsible for more than ”people safety.” In addition to university Security, our team includes the university's Emergency Management Department, Transportation (Shuttle buses and the Cycle Learning Center) and Parking, and Integrated Security Technology. Level Scope: Provides immediate supervision to a unit or group of operational or technical employees. A portion of time may be spent performing individual tasks related to the unit; however, supervisory activities must constitute a primary part of the job. Supervises unit operations to ensure compliance with departmental or campus policies, procedures, and defined internal controls. Ensures accountability and stewardship of campus resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental standards and procedures.

Requirements

  • Ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems
  • Ability to communicate information effectively.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote an effective operation.
  • Knowledge of the Department, its employees, and how the department functions.
  • Good knowledge of: self-defense measures; first aid; security problems and safety hazards as they relate to a large complex of buildings and grounds.
  • Some knowledge of: supervisory practices.
  • Experience: performing investigations incidental to security activities; training others in security procedures; completing investigative reports; making oral presentations.
  • A valid Driver’s License

Responsibilities

  • Engages in Department problem-solving for organizational issues; makes recommendations for Department efficiencies and advancement.
  • Provides leadership, management, and team building to their assigned detail under the supervision and coordination of his/her chain-of-command.
  • Manages and monitors employees’ scheduling, work assignments, communication, and personnel development.
  • Evaluates and documents employee performance, providing regular feedback.
  • Displays the highest level of professionalism while performing all aspects of their work duties.
  • Utilize crime and call for service data to ensure evidence-based security patrol practices are being used while addressing crime and livability issues.
  • Delivers high-quality customer service to all members of the department and the entire campus community.
  • Plans and coordinates a variety of special administrative projects and assignments.
  • Exercise discretion when dealing with confidential matters and information.
  • Provides leadership and supervision to Public Safety Officers in the field
  • Conducts personal actions as appropriate
  • Oversees Public Safety Officer documentation, ensuring documentation is accurate and grammatically correct.
  • Work both independently and as a team with other members of the department and outside agency partners.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
  • Actively patrols campus by vehicle, foot, or bicycle
  • Conducts building walk-throughs
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, ranging from medical crises and security threats to motor vehicle assistance and building access, coordinating with emergency agencies when necessary.
  • Investigates policy violations.
  • Prepares factual and accurate incident reports.
  • Represents the department and the division in select working groups, committees, and partnerships, both internal and external to the University
  • Renews job knowledge by reading professional journals, participating in educational opportunities, and belonging to professional organizations.
  • Assist law enforcement agencies and other emergency responders with matters relating to Boise State students, staff, and/or faculty.
  • Communicate security-related needs and information to various Boise State departments, Boise Police Department (including university dispatch officers), and other non-campus entities via person-to-person contact, telephone, e-mail, etc.
  • May perform other duties as needed.
