About The Position

Performs highly skilled technical and mechanical work involving the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of the Town's fleet of fire apparatus, ambulances, police vehicles, and emergency response equipment. Serves as the Foxborough Fire & Rescue Department's Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT), ensuring that emergency vehicles and equipment remain safe, reliable, and operational to support emergency response services. Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, inspections, testing, and related fleet management activities in accordance with manufacturer specifications, industry standards, and applicable regulations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in automotive and heavy vehicle maintenance and repair, including at least five (5) years of experience maintaining emergency vehicles, fire apparatus, or comparable specialty equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to pass an in-depth background check.
  • Possession of a valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or Class B.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical training in automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, or emergency vehicle maintenance is preferred.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification and Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications are preferred.
  • Experience servicing Pierce Manufacturing apparatus, Ford vehicles, and manufacturer-specific diagnostic systems is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive inspection, diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and overhaul of fire apparatus, ambulances, police cruisers, emergency response vehicles, and related vehicles and equipment.
  • Conducts scheduled preventative maintenance, safety inspections, and routine servicing to maximize vehicle reliability, minimize downtime, and ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
  • Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drivetrains, steering, suspension, braking systems, air brake systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, charging systems, and electronic vehicle components.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and tests fire pumps, aerial devices, emergency warning systems, lighting, communication equipment, and other specialized emergency vehicle systems.
  • Operates computerized diagnostic equipment and manufacturer-specific software to identify mechanical and electronic system deficiencies and complete repairs.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of hand tools, power tools, specialty equipment, testing devices, and diagnostic instruments used in vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Responds to emergency scenes or roadside incidents, as necessary, to provide mechanical assistance, transport emergency vehicles or equipment, and restore apparatus to service.
  • Maintains detailed maintenance, repair, inspection, inventory, and service records for departmental vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists with fleet planning, equipment evaluation, warranty coordination, vendor communications, and recommendations regarding vehicle replacement, repairs, and preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and organized work environment while complying with applicable safety standards, departmental policies, and environmental regulations governing vehicle maintenance and hazardous materials.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed, or as situation dictates.
  • Regular attendance at the workplace is required.
