About The Position

The Public Safety Dispatcher serves as the central point of contact and operational anchor for the Public Safety Dispatch Center at Chemeketa Community College. Characterized as a position of high trust and confidence, this role bridges frontline dispatch personnel and the Public Safety Administration. The Public Safety Dispatcher is responsible for overseeing center operations, navigating staffing issues under administration guidance, and make critical administrative choices during crises. Additionally, the role serves as a key liaison—fostering and maintaining vital, collaborative partnerships with campus officers, administration, and external police, fire, and medical emergency services. Requirements

  • Ability to accurately and effectively type 60 WPM.
  • Experience organizing, prioritizing, and completing work accurately and consistently while maintaining attention to detail in a fast-paced or high-volume environment.
  • Experience using computers to process, enter, and verify detailed data with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, demonstrating cultural awareness, empathy, and adaptability in various interactions.
  • Two (2) years of full-time work experience in the knowledge and skills listed above. This is typically achieved through an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Communications, Emergency Management, or Public Safety.
  • OR Two (2) years of full-time work experience which reflect the Knowledge and Skills listed above.

Nice To Haves

  • Must possess a valid Driver's License.
  • Six (6) years of operational or administrative experience, preferably within law enforcement, emergency communications, or governmental environments requiring fast paced coordination and high precision information management.
  • Advanced skill in active listening, verbal de-escalation, and maintaining a calm, authoritative command presence during high-stress or emergency calls.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, remaining objective and unbiased in every interaction.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates high-level radio and telephonic communications during college operating hours, managing specialized public safety databases and interfacing seamlessly with the local 9-1-1 emergency system.
  • Addresses issuance of college parking citations for violation of the College Traffic Codes.
  • Evaluates and resolves parking citation inquiries and appeals, utilizing established protocols, detailed documentation, and sound judgment.
  • Partners with the Business Office to streamline the processing, tracking, and management of parking permits, fine collections, and associated administrative workflows.
  • Disseminates critical, time-sensitive mass notifications and emergency alerts across campus utilizing Informacast and other specialized communication networks.
  • Employs advanced communication skills to professionally de-escalate high-stress interactions and resolve grievances with agitated individuals both in person and over the phone.
  • Monitors campus Access Control systems, exercising discretion and operational judgment to grant or restrict entry to college buildings and high-security zones based on authorization protocols.
  • Trains, mentors, and provides operational oversight for student workers and part-time personnel, delivering procedural guidance and advising on daily tasks to ensure departmental alignment.
  • Logs and tracks all calls for service within the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, ensuring precise documentation of incident dispositions for record-keeping, crime statistics, and Clery Act compliance.
  • Supports field personnel and threat assessment teams by conducting targeted database research, verifying vehicle data, and retrieving sensitive criminal histories or high-risk offender logs.
  • Drafts, edits, and manages confidential documentation, specialized reports, and project specifications to support the Director of Public Safety, Assistant Director, and Sergeants.
  • Manages the physical provisioning of campus access, utilizing specialized badging systems and software to issue college keys, partner credentials, and employee ID cards.
  • Serves as the primary operational liaison between campus stakeholders and the Facilities and IT departments, troubleshooting technical requests and coordinating public safety work orders.
  • Tracks daily attendance and shift logs to ensure data integrity and accurate payroll processing for dispatch staff and student employees.
  • Develops and delivers technical training programs for new and existing personnel, focusing on mastery of departmental equipment, specialized software, and core institutional processes.
  • Designs and facilitates professional workshops and seminars on functional public safety and organizational topics to enhance department-wide readiness.
  • Provides guidance and oversight during complex dispatch scenarios and critical crisis response situations.
  • Manages internal departmental logistics, including the distribution of mail, database maintenance, and serving as a central information resource for internal divisions and external agencies.
  • Escalates high-priority and emergency situations immediately to supervisory personnel and administrative leadership to facilitate swift, coordinated incident response management.
  • Consults with administrative staff on appropriate means of performing work orders and troubleshoots as liaison between customers (students, staff, faculty, renters and general public) and different college departments.
  • Provide accurate information to students’ employees, and visitors and responds to a variety of requests for information and assistance related to college rules, policies, procedures, and general information related to the college.

  • Participates in recruitment and retention of students at an individual and institutional level in promotion of student success.
