About The Position

Benesch is a growing, multi-disciplined planning, engineering, and professional services firm that enhances infrastructure and communities across the country. The National Railroad Division is hiring for its Public Projects team, supporting railroad and public agency clients on infrastructure projects that directly impact safety and mobility. This role involves working at the intersection of rail operations and public transportation, managing projects from planning through construction in close partnership with DOTs, municipalities, and railroads. The Public Project Manager will coordinate across multiple stakeholders, navigate complex regulatory requirements, and serve as a critical link between public agencies and real-world rail operations. This position supports infrastructure projects across the Western U.S. and is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys owning projects end to end, and has experience managing work from early design through construction. The role offers remote flexibility, but candidates must be located in Kansas City, Kansas, due to travel requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required.
  • 3+ years of experience managing or owning project assignments across multiple states.
  • Experience supporting projects from preliminary engineering through construction.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • Experience working with local and state agencies or public sector clients.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating across teams.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Candidates must pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and a drug screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering or railroad infrastructure projects preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of project delivery and play a key role in keeping projects moving forward.
  • Lead and support project teams to ensure strong performance and accountability.
  • Execute project work plans in coordination with the Group Manager.
  • Manage project scope, schedule, and budget, while tracking performance and progress.
  • Support cost estimating efforts, including unit pricing for additional work.
  • Review financial reports and provide clear project updates.
  • Coordinate with survey teams and other internal stakeholders.
  • Oversee day-to-day project operations and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Prepare and review project correspondence, reports, and deliverables.
  • Lead project meetings and drive follow-ups with internal teams and clients.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with public agency clients.
  • Coordinate with subconsultants and support contract development.
  • Assist with negotiations and help resolve project-related issues.
  • Ensure compliance with quality standards, procedures, and project requirements.
  • Support invoicing, contract compliance, and client follow-ups.
  • Capture lessons learned and support continuous improvement.
  • Lead project closeout activities and contribute to staff development.
  • Manage field logistics, including vehicles and equipment as needed.
