About The Position

Under general supervision, the Public Information Coordinator develops and administers City-related media and public information activities, including creating and/or reviewing material for social media dissemination, drafting and reviewing press releases, and creating and/or reviewing public announcements; coordinates and monitors placement of information on the City’s website and intranet site, as well as various social media accounts; responds to a variety of public information related inquiries; provides support for the creation of La Habra Life articles; reviews information placed in the “Life in La Habra” magazine; provides a variety of support and assistance related to the public information function and performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • Professional writing and presentation skills, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Basic functions of municipal government, including the role of an elected City Council and appointed boards and commissions.
  • Highly effective customer service skills and techniques.
  • Website development, management and design.
  • The role of a comprehensive public information programs in a local government environment and marketing/promotional techniques at the municipal level.
  • Principles, practices, methods and techniques involved with public relations/marketing, writing, graphic arts, audio visual production, and photography.
  • Advanced video and multi-media equipment, productions, operations and techniques.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Efficiently organize tasks and set priorities.
  • Work in an office environment requiring prolonged sitting or standing, or in the field in inclement weather, as necessary.
  • Maintain work effectiveness and meet deadlines with frequent changes in workload and priority assignments.
  • Plan, organize, coordinate and implement community involvement activities, special events and other complex projects and assignments.
  • Use tact, discretion, and diplomacy in conflicts situations, and maintain an open and approachable manner.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse environment, including: elected officials at all levels of government, staff, management, the general public, community and business groups, media, and others encountered in the course of work.
  • Walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, bend, reach, twist, grasp, drag, lift and carry items totaling approximately 25 pounds in weight.
  • Communicate with City staff, management representatives, governmental and business representatives, consultants, vendors, contractors, community groups, and the general public.
  • Work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in journalism, marketing, public relations, communications, public administration or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of communications, public information, social and media relations, and community outreach experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a Class C driver's license issued from the State of California, acceptable driving record, and evidence of insurance are required.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the City’s primary social media coordinator; works with all City Departments to track, gather and disseminate information related to City programs, events and activities.
  • Oversees all City Department social media accounts and coordinates each department's social media materials, information and outreach.
  • Evaluates and develop new means of engaging with the community through social media, printed media, community events and the City’s website; maintains awareness of new trends and developments in social media content for continued and effective community engagement.
  • Serves as the City's co-website administrator; works with all departments to determine effective means of organizing and presenting important web content related to department and City services; ensures that information on the City’s website is current, relevant and accurate.
  • Coordinates with departmental webmasters regarding the placement of content on the City’s website and intranet site.
  • Monitors and coordinates the City’s government cable channel and prepares public service messages and announcements for cable channel use.
  • Coordinates consistent marketing messages and branding of City programs and services.
  • Creates marketing materials, including high-quality print and digital flyers, catalogues, and brochures.
  • Attends City events, as required, and takes high quality photographs and video recordings as needed for publication purposes and to document events.
  • Organize community outreach materials for public events.
  • Develops and executes public information programs that are designed to convey specific information regarding City events, programs, and services
  • Collaborates with key management staff to identify department communication and marketing deficiencies and needs; ensures consistent and accurate messaging.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of various marketing channels to generate community participation and engagement; adjust program and outreach priorities as needed.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests for information from the media, governmental and other representatives, and the public; oversee the creation of press releases, ads, and information materials.
  • Coordinates with law enforcement personnel to present sensitive information related to investigations, crimes, and other matters of sensitive public interest.
  • Coordinates with public works personnel to distribute time sensitive information related to street closures, CalTrans SigAlerts, pending weather events, park closures, capital projects, or any other impacts in the public right of way.
  • Develops and maintains marketing and key stakeholder contact lists to ensure the City’s ability to communicate messages to targeted audiences quickly and effectively.
  • Coordinate communications with outside agencies and organizations; attend and participate in local community group meetings.
  • Assists with the planning, development and implementation of the City’s bi-annual Community Satisfaction Survey effort.
  • Perform related duties, as assigned.
