About The Position

Under general supervision, is assigned to a division within the City of San Antonio's Metro Health District to assist in general administrative functions for the purpose of developing a working knowledge of a targeted area in public health. Performs internship duties in accordance with benchmarked professional positions. Level of duties performed depends on type of program and degree program the student is enrolled in. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment. Exercises no supervision. This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason. The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Staff in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD Policy DM 13.2. Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Development (GED) Certificate.
  • Student Intern I: Must be enrolled in a U.S. Department of Education accredited Associate's Degree program, vocational or technical school, with the first year of the program completed.
  • Student Intern II: Must be enrolled in U.S. Department of Education accredited undergraduate degree program.
  • Student Intern III: Must be enrolled in a U.S. Department of Education accredited degree program, graduate, or postgraduate.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer and utilizing rudimentary software.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to gather information for reports.
  • Ability to learn pertinent Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.

Nice To Haves

  • Enrollment in U.S. Department of Education accredited degree program related to Public Health, Community Health, or any degree program that can support San Antonio Metro Health in other areas (Health Policy, Marketing, Communications, Performance Improvement, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Learns about area of career interest by applying major area of studies, observing, and assisting professionals in the assigned department where work will be performed.
  • May assist in the coordination, administration, and/or monitoring of specific programs.
  • May assist with conducting research, collecting and organizing data, performing analyses, and preparing reports.
  • May propose solutions to existing problems and discuss recommendations with administrative personnel.
  • If assigned to a health clinic, may assist with providing clinical services.
  • Assists with special projects as assigned.
