About The Position

Provides school health care through the implementation of the Board of Education’s programs in schools under the supervision of the School Health Supervisor. Responsible for the achievement of the physical, mental, and social well-being of students and school staff, through the utilization of nursing skills, and for the completion of public health nursing assignments in the public, private and parochial school systems. This is a full-time position that is scheduled to work during the 10 month academic school year.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university, or currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program with at least three academic credits toward a bachelor’s degree.
  • If provisionally qualified with at least three academic credits, employee must obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing within three (3) years from appointment to the position.
  • One (1) year of related experience as a registered nurse within five (5) years immediately prior, preferably in public/community, pediatric nursing, or school health environment.
  • Licensed as a registered nurse in the State of Connecticut.
  • Current C.P.R. certification required prior to appointment date.
  • Knowledge of the practice of school nursing, including the student and family as the unit of care.
  • Knowledge of the use of community resources, and the functions of local health related agencies.
  • Working knowledge of public health programs, community health problems and preventive measures.
  • Working knowledge of inter-professional relationships in the implementation of programs.
  • Ability to plan observations, complete evaluations and reports.
  • Ability to supervise an assigned clerk.
  • Ability to recognize the needs and concerns of people and to maintain a constructive relationship when dealing with them.
  • Ability to provide skilled nursing care including ability to administer CPR.
  • Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the position; ability to ingress and egress public and private buildings.

Responsibilities

  • Offers and delivers comprehensive well child care to school age children.
  • Assesses the overall condition of an ill child as to the acuteness and severity of disease and decide what problems will need referral to other resources.
  • Provides skillful management of childhood emergencies until additional assistance is available.
  • Participates in the Pupil Study Team and Planning and Placement Team.
  • Participates and assists in assessing and managing specific problems relating to the special education child.
  • Collaborates with other professionals in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the nursing care plan.
  • Gives prescribed treatment and teaches and supervises others who give such treatment.
  • Observes and estimates potential dangers of disabling conditions and indicates preventive and corrective measures.
  • Performs screenings and interprets findings to individuals or families.
  • Administers preventive immunizations/vaccines or treatments under medical direction.
  • Assists the physician or nurse practitioner with health assessments.
  • Makes home visits as deemed necessary.
  • Interprets local health regulations and emphasizes individual and group responsibility for the early reporting of any signs of communicable disease.
  • Secures prompt medical examination of individuals who are suspected of having, or are known to have been exposed to, communicable disease.
  • Maintains school health records by implementation of the nursing process.
  • Completes reports, surveys and forms as required.
  • Teaches parents and teachers to recognize early signs of disease and deviations from normal health, and to initiate appropriate action.
  • Teaches basic principles of healthful living in relation to changing needs of individuals, students and school staff.
  • Plans and supervises activities of health office clerks.
  • Evaluates school health services and facilities and notifies appropriate personnel of apparent deficiencies.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
