The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. The New River Health District provides public health services to the residents of Floyd County, Giles County, Montgomery County, Pulaski County and the City of Radford. The mission of the New River Health Department is to prevent illness and disease, protect the environment, and promote optimal health and emergency preparedness for everyone within the New River Health District. Independently provides professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes and schools and other community or congregate care settings. Performs nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management. Participates in public health emergencies and community health assessments. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a RN by state code. May supervise support staff. To enhance public health outcomes by efficiently implementing disease prevention, intervention, and surveillance activities. The Nurse DIS will leverage clinical expertise to identify, investigate, and manage communicable diseases, providing patient education, contact tracing, and case management. This role will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and community partners to reduce disease transmission, ensure timely reporting, and promote evidence-based interventions, thereby supporting the organization’s mission of safeguarding community health.
