About The Position

This is an intermediate level professional nursing work in providing primary, preventive, and rehabilitative care to individuals and families in the Pregnancy Test Care, Family Planning Clinic and Teen Wellness Clinic, and Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) clinic. Employee demonstrates and implements techniques of nursing care and counsels for promotion of health and prevention of disease in clinics and other standard settings within an assigned area.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience.
  • A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the N.C. Board of Nursing.
  • Individuals employed in a local Health Department without a B.S. Degree which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation or a Master’s in Public Health, will be required to complete an introductory course in principles and practices of public health nursing sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services- Division of Public Health within one year of employment as a condition of continued employment in accordance with Health Services Commission Rule, 10 NCAC 46.0301.
  • Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited universities.
  • Applicants who have obtained their education outside of the U.S. and its territories must have their academic degrees validated as equivalent to the degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S.
  • Must have or obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Background check and negative drug test are required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care, collect/report basic patient data, and ensure proper use of health data.
  • Serve at the staff nurse level in clinics with higher-level staff available for consultation.
  • Provide pregnancy test results, education, and verification forms for Medicaid application.
  • Educate on prenatal care, nutrition, and expected delivery date.
  • Refer patients with negative results to Family Planning Clinic for contraception counseling.
  • Conduct telephone triage and follow-up with patients.
  • Engage in program/agency-wide planning, contribute data/ideas for improvement, and participate in record audits and reviews.
  • This position may require the nurse to provide contraception methods subject to appropriate training and will cross-train in the Family Planning/Teen Wellness to provide coverage during staffing shortages.
  • Skill sets may be applied as needed in any public health area, clinic, or program.
  • Employee is subject to be called upon anytime to help the agency respond to a public health emergency which may include, but is not limited to, outbreak investigations, staffing mass dispensing or immunization clinics, providing disaster relief, or other incidents (man-made or natural and intentional or non-intentional) as they arise, or any public health response requested by the Health Director.
