About The Position

Under the direction of the School Nurse Supervisor, the Public Health School Nurse is responsible for providing direct professional care for student acute illnesses and injuries, managing chronic health conditions (through IHPs), and acts as a liaison between families, school staff, and health care professionals to provide a safe and healthy learning environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing with 2 years of relevant experience
  • Current valid Licensure from State of Ohio to practice as a Registered Nurse
  • School Nurse Licensure or qualifications to obtain Licensure
  • Must obtain 24 CE's every two (2) years (including one nursing law education credit)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams).
  • Understands and acknowledges that Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County uses evidence-based and evidence-informed public health practices based on scientific research including health promotion theory and practice, environmental health measures, and communicable disease control measures including vaccination, isolation, and quarantine practices, and medicine for treatment and prevention of disease, among others.
  • Understands and acknowledges the use of tobacco or nicotine products in any form including replacement therapy products and prescription medications used to treat smoking addiction for anyone hired after January 1, 2014, is prohibited
  • Required to play an active role during a public health emergency, crisis, outbreak, incident, or event in which the Health Commissioner deems additional personnel resources are warranted. This may include changes in responsibilities and working locations/hours
  • Completion of Incident Command System 100 and National Incident Management System 700 courses within 90 days of hire
  • Valid State of Ohio driver’s license and insurance on any personal vehicle that will be used for work

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with school age children/pediatrics and knowledge of school health procedures
  • Experience working with children and giving childhood immunizations
  • Knowledge of Immunization schedule

Responsibilities

  • Performing health screenings
  • Assessing students' health and developing a plan of care
  • Conducting assessment and immunization record review in alignment with Ohio Department of Health (ODH) and the Ohio Department of Education standards (ODE)
  • Administering medication and treatments as required
  • Documenting data, generating reports, and completing appropriate forms as required
  • Providing educational sessions for students throughout the school year and faculty as needed
  • Developing educational guidance and providing education to patients, high-risk groups, healthcare providers, and others in the community concerning student needs
