About The Position

The mission of the Louisiana Department of Health is to protect and promote health and to ensure access to medical, preventive, and rehabilitative services for all residents of the State of Louisiana. The Infectious Disease Epidemiology (IDEpi) Section is responsible for reducing the occurrence of infectious diseases to public health importance. The Section conducts surveillance activities to detect cases and identify trends to institute appropriate intervention and follow-up control measure. The position will be under the supervision of a Public Health Epidemiologist Manager. This position requires routine statewide duties, including fieldwork, inspections, investigations, or direct services that extend beyond the employee’s domicile parish. These statewide responsibilities are an inherent and ongoing part of the job and may require frequent travel.

Requirements

• Four years of experience in epidemiology, healthcare analytics and reporting, health equity, nursing or public health; OR A bachelor’s degree in public health, epidemiology, biological sciences, behavioral sciences, health sciences or nursing plus one year of experience in epidemiology; OR A master's degree in public health, epidemiology, biological sciences, behavioral sciences, health sciences or nursing.

Responsibilities

• Develops, implements and maintains Louisiana’s legionellosis surveillance system, including providing annual training opportunities and ensuring accuracy of data reported.
• Oversees on-site epidemiologic assessments/investigations of healthcare facilities and other public locations where legionellosis clusters have been detected.
• Interprets, analyzes and evaluates statewide data submitted to the Infectious Disease Reporting Information System (IDRIS) from Louisiana facilities.
• Creates reports to identify problem areas and measures progress of prevention efforts.
• Oversees surveillance, outbreak detection, and public health response to other water-borne diseases, including cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis.
• Represents LA OPH in national surveillance task forces.
• Conducts presentations and participates in workgroups and forums in accordance with CDC requests
