About The Position

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) investigates deaths in New York City under various circumstances, including criminal violence, accidents, suicides, sudden deaths, unattended deaths, deaths in correctional facilities, and suspicious or unusual deaths. The Drug Intelligence and Intervention Group (DIIG) within OCME focuses on tracking overdose deaths, providing information to public sector leaders, and supporting families of overdose victims. DIIG conducts public health surveillance of overdoses, identifies suspected overdose cases, monitors trends, and facilitates inter-agency collaboration through initiatives like RxStat and Overdose Fatality Review meetings. The Epidemiologist II will be instrumental in collecting, analyzing, and disseminating epidemiologic and programmatic data for OCME, supporting surveillance, research, and program evaluation projects.

Requirements

  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to a doctorate degree with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to a master's degree with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in '3' above.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required.
  • Selected candidates will be required to provide a DNA sample by swabbing.
  • This position has been identified as “essential.” During emergency events, “essential” positions may require 24-hour availability.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze large administrative datasets using SAS, PowerBI, and excel to identify patterns, trends, and associations related to overdose deaths
  • Design reports, data visualizations, and dashboards to effectively communicate information to stakeholders with varying levels of technical expertise
  • Develop and implement data quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of epidemiological analyses
  • Provide technical assistance and training to other staff on data analysis methods and SAS programming
  • Response to ad hoc data requests by conducting rapid analyses and assessments to provide agency leadership and partners with data-drive insights
  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers on the development of academic publications using OCME overdose-related data
  • Create and improve program evaluation tools to track DIIG engagement with overdose bereaved individuals, working closely with DIIG Deputy Director and DIIG Social Workers
