About The Position

The Public Education Specialist (4-H Youth Development) is responsible for planning, organizing, and developing educational programming in assigned specialties. This role involves researching and developing curricula, preparing activities and materials, and coordinating programs with participants. The specialist will deliver educational programs and training in various settings for diverse audiences, including students, teachers, community groups, and businesses. A key aspect of the role is soliciting, coordinating, training, and assisting volunteers. The position also requires tracking educational program data, compiling reports on participation, costs, and effectiveness, and conducting surveys for feedback. The specialist must stay updated on changes in their field and process documentation related to department operations. Communication with various stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, and the public, is essential for coordinating activities and exchanging information. Supplemental duties include promoting and recruiting student participation in 4-H programs, facilitating club meetings, providing guidance to 4-H members for competitive events, and transporting youth participants to events. Collaboration with county staff for program reporting and communicating outcomes to stakeholders through various channels is also required. The role involves preparing and submitting reports, participating in evening and weekend activities, and attending required trainings and professional development opportunities.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Public Relations, Communications, or a field of study directly related to the departmental mission required.
  • Three years of experience in training, communications, or a related field.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules, trains, and assists volunteers in completing volunteer assignments.
  • Tracks educational program data.
  • Compiles data related to program participation, costs, and effectiveness.
  • Conducts surveys to collect participant feedback.
  • Prepares related reports.
  • Researches and stays abreast of changes in the assigned field/specialty.
  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations.
  • Communicates with department staff, supervisor, other employees, schools, community groups, volunteers, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Plan, organize, schedule and conduct a variety of youth programs, activities and events.
  • Promote and recruit student participation in 4-H youth development and educational programs.
  • Facilitate educational club meetings within schools and deliver established curricula aligned with state educational standards.
  • Provide guidance and support to 4-H members preparing for competitive events.
  • Transport 4-H youth participants, and occasionally adult volunteers or clientele, to county, district, and state events.
  • Collaborate with county staff to compile program reporting and communicate program outcomes to stakeholders.
  • Prepare and submit accurate, timely, and complete reports, along with supporting documentation.
  • Participate in evening and weekend activities as required.
  • Attend University of Georgia Extension trainings, professional development opportunities, and program updates throughout the year.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned in support of the DeKalb County Extension/4-H.
