About The Position

You will serve as a PUBLIC AFFAIRS SPECIALIST in the U.S. Naval Academy Media Relations Branch of NAVAL ACADEMY. This role involves crafting various forms of public communication, analyzing information for accuracy and suitability, and managing relationships with media contacts and the general public. You will be responsible for promoting campus projects, events, and accomplishments to a wider audience.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
  • New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
  • Resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
  • Specialized experience must include: 1) Researching and drafting a variety of materials, including fact sheets, pitch letters, media advisories, news releases and feature stories designed for use in media campaigns; 2) Distributing and promoting information related to organizational programs and policies to a variety of publics; 3) Performing preliminary analysis of available information to determine accuracy and suitability for use in written materials.
  • All experience must be fully demonstrated in your resume to be considered for the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related (in lieu of specialized experience).

Responsibilities

  • Write press releases, media advisories, feature articles, fact sheets, and pitch letters.
  • Edit and adapt military and institutional policy into clear, public-friendly content.
  • Analyze information for accuracy and suitability before publication.
  • Pitch stories and distribute announcements to reporters and news organizations via phone, email, and press releases.
  • Cultivate and sustain positive working relationships with regular press contacts.
  • Ensure media materials are received and respond to reporter follow-up inquiries.
  • Track daily and weekly print and digital publications for mentions of the Academy or key leadership topics.
  • Select, prioritize, and assemble relevant press clips for leadership review.
  • Answer incoming phone calls and questions from the general public regarding Academy events and policies.
  • Proactively discover campus projects, events, and accomplishments suitable for public promotion.
