PT Emission and V2V Lab Engineer

V2Soft•Auburn Hills, MI

About The Position

The PT Emission and V2V Lab Engineer performs emissions, fuel economy, and Virtual-to-Vehicle (V2V) tests in a powertrain dynamometer test cell, with a focus on light-duty vehicle emissions testing. Testing takes place in a dynamometer environment rather than on-vehicle. The engineer operates and integrates test equipment, measurement instrumentation, auxiliary data acquisition systems, combustion analysis systems, and other tools requested by calibration engineers. The role owns test-cell operations, from verifying equipment installation and operation through test execution and data generation, collection, and organization. It also involves troubleshooting test failures and data issues, working with PLC-controlled systems, and coordinating with facilities, instrumentation, and vehicle calibration teams. Candidates with some engineering experience are sought; recent graduates, including those with academic experience, may be considered.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering.
  • Engineering experience in dynamometer test cells; powertrain dynamometer test-cell experience is preferred.
  • Experience with cell automation software and control systems, such as AVL PUMA, Horiba Stars, or Schenck X-One.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, including the ability to work with diverse teams in a union-represented, multi-shift lab environment.
  • Understanding of dynamometer operation and operating modes used to control test articles based on test requirements.
  • Ability to integrate devices and instrumentation into a dynamometer test cell to meet test objectives.
  • Expertise in instrumentation signal types, including analog inputs/outputs, digital inputs/outputs, and frequency signals.
  • Understanding of vehicle road-load coefficients, road-load derivations, and vehicle energy demand.
  • Knowledge of basic software logic and ability to write simple programs using Visual Basic, Python, or C.
  • Proficiency in setting up CAN networks in a test cell, modifying DBC files, and using software such as CANalyzer to collect and analyze CAN signals.
  • Experience with ETAS equipment and software, including MDA and INCA.
  • Ability to use controller diagnostic software to identify active and stored PCodes (faults).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with CARB and CFR emissions-testing documentation, including laws, calculations, and system verifications for combustion engines, PHEVs, and battery electric vehicles.
  • Understanding of the operation and limitations of high-voltage batteries, battery models, and battery emulators, such as AV900 and AVL BTEXXX.
  • Knowledge of PLC systems and their use in controlling critical functions within powertrain test cells.

Nice To Haves

  • Powertrain dynamometer test-cell experience is preferred.
  • Recent graduates, including candidates with academic experience, may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Perform emissions, fuel economy, and V2V tests in a powertrain dynamometer test cell.
  • Operate dynamometer test equipment, measurement instrumentation, and measurement systems to execute tests accurately.
  • Integrate devices, instrumentation, auxiliary data acquisition systems, combustion analysis systems, and other requested tools into the test cell.
  • Troubleshoot data loss, premature test shutdowns, and test execution failures.
  • Own test-cell operations, including verifying equipment installation and operation and ensuring smooth test execution.
  • Oversee test data generation, collection, and organization to support calibration, hardware, and software decisions.
  • Work with PLC-controlled systems to perform test procedures and control critical test-cell functions.
  • Coordinate with facilities, instrumentation teams, and vehicle calibration engineers to resolve test-cell issues.
  • Ensure tests meet applicable regulatory and industry emissions and fuel-economy requirements.
