This 3-credit course, PSY3410 AUTISM AND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY, will review concepts, procedures, and research related to autism, intellectual disability (ID), and other developmental disabilities from a psychological, educational, and biomedical perspective. The course will cover a range of topics including etiology, assessment, the development of language and communication, social development, challenging behavior, family support, community integration, psychological interventions, comprehensive programs, psychopharmacology, legal issues, and public policy. It will also provide students with a broad range of information regarding research and applied behavioral sciences. Knowledge of autism, ID, and developmental disabilities will be important for future applied behavior analysts, school psychologists, clinical psychologists, special education teachers, regular education teachers, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, developmental pediatricians, social workers, policymakers, and education/disability lawyers.
