About The Position

A Geriatric Psychiatrist specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental, addictive and emotional disorders such as schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance-related disorders, sexual disorders, gender dysphoria and adjustment disorders in older populations. The psychiatrist is able to understand the biological, psychological and social components of illness and, therefore, is uniquely prepared to treat the whole person. The main form of treatment used by a psychiatrist is psychopharmacology. A psychiatrist is qualified to order diagnostic laboratory tests and to prescribe medications, evaluate and treat psychological and interpersonal problems and to intervene with families who are coping with stress, crises and other problems in living. This in-person position is important to the local psychiatry residency and the successful applicant will have interest (if not experience) in teaching at the graduate medical education level.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine- (Required)
  • Licensed Medical Doctor - State of Pennsylvania

  • B/C Geriatric Psychiatry preferred.
  • Interest (if not experience) in teaching at the graduate medical education level.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews patients to obtain information such as symptoms, medical histories, and family histories.
  • Performs and/or interprets diagnostic tests as needed.
  • Diagnose and design a plan of treatment for injuries and/or illness.
  • May prescribe or administer medications.
  • Prepares, maintains, and reviews records that include patients' histories, examination findings, treatment plans, or outcomes.
