About The Position

The Staff Psychiatrist is responsible for providing psychiatry services within the Student Health Service (SHS) at the University of British Columbia (UBC). SHS aims to help students achieve their educational goals by reducing barriers to academic success through improved wellbeing and the management of acute and chronic mental health conditions. The psychiatrist will integrate their knowledge and skills in managing the mental health issues of predominantly adolescents and early adults, aligning with UBC's specific requirements and utilizing both UBC and external resources. As a key member of the Student Health Team, the incumbent will collaborate with management, team physicians, and other team members, supporting referral pathways, assessment, triage, and contributing to the development of policies, procedures, and programs related to psychiatry within SHS. They will serve as the primary point of contact for consultations and inquiries from providers within Student Health & Wellbeing concerning psychiatry. The role also emphasizes a commitment to anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusionary practices in student care.

Requirements

• Holds an accredited medical degree recognized in Canada.
• Completion of an accredited fellowship training program in psychiatry recognized by the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (RCPC).
• Holds or is eligible for an active and unrestricted medical license to practice in psychiatry with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC).
• Must have CPSBC license prior to the official start date of employment.
• Active member of the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) or equivalent for medical liability insurance.
• Competencies in the use of electronic medical records (EMR).
• Proven sensibility and appreciation of the role that indigeneity, gender, race, disability, gender identity, sexuality, and social background play in the experience of health, wellbeing, and health promotion & education in a university setting.
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice, inclusion, diversity, and health equity.

Nice To Haves

• Competencies in delivering psychiatry care via Telehealth and/or Virtual Health as required.
• Minimum of 3 or more years of successful practice experience in the context of young adult psychiatry, preferably in a higher education setting.
• Professional training, theory base, and/or knowledge in the areas of student development, medical treatment and psychotherapy, psychiatric assessment, multicultural psychiatric care, normal psychology and psychopathology, ethical and professional standards of practice, relevant federal and provincial statutes, consultation, technology, and leadership.
• Knowledge and understanding of university procedures and policies as they relate to students.
• Clinical approach that is congruent with the needs of a post secondary student population.
• Knowledge of student development theory and its implications for the provision of psychiatric services.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care through scheduled in-person, Telehealth, and Virtual appointments, including one-on-one and group visits.
• Conduct assessments, triage, psychotherapy, and medication management.
• Handle referrals and provide emergency/crisis response.
• Perform consultations, including taking medical and psychiatric history, conducting psychiatric examinations, reviewing laboratory findings, and writing consultation reports.
• Offer medically appropriate care at or above the current standard of practice.
• Provide individual or group counseling and ongoing monitoring of patient conditions.
• Discuss and advise patients, referring physicians, or patient representatives on conditions and recommended therapy.
• Arrange for related assessments, procedures, and/or therapy, and interpret results.
• Arrange for follow-up care.
• Maintain adequate medical records.
• Triage psychiatry referrals and manage the psychiatry waitlist.
• Assist the management team in developing policy, procedures, and programs related to psychiatry in SHS.
• Serve as the first point of contact for consultation and questions from providers in Student Health & Wellbeing regarding psychiatry.
• Ensure services are provided in ways that are sensitive and responsive to the diversity of the student population.
• Collaborate with UBC or other healthcare professionals in developing clinical mental health programs and initiatives.
• Act as a liaison and provide consultation to faculties, departments, and other student services regarding students in crises.
• Liaise and consult with UBC Counselling Services professional staff, and with the Medical Director and other SHS professional staff regarding clinic policy, specific case diagnosis, and management.
• Participate in health promotion programs to promote wellness, including developing web-based information and presentations.
• Participate in relevant professional development on mental health issues related to the post-secondary student population.
• Collaborate with UBC and non-UBC professionals to identify, develop, and implement innovations and initiatives to enhance service delivery.
• Work closely with fee-for-service psychiatrists and medical office assistants.
• Ensure compliance with UBC policies and professional ethics and guidelines.
• Provide training and mentorship to medical residents in psychiatry or other specialties.
