About The Position

A staff psychiatrist serves as a practicing specialist under the clinical supervision of a Senior Psychiatrist and administrative supervision of a Program Director. Psychiatrists conduct comprehensive diagnostic psychiatric evaluations, prescribe medication and other treatment interventions, monitor medication side effects, participate in the interdisciplinary treatment team process and provide a range of psychiatric services in the treatment and rehabilitation of an assigned group of clients or residents. Psychiatrists at ICL service in a variety of treatment setting: Mobile treatment teams, outpatient mental health clinics, transitional housing, and specialty care programs.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, regulatory and auditing agency regulations and standards
  • Ability to write clinical notes in compliance with all applicable standards and regulations
  • Basic computer skills including fluency in electronic medical record applications
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members, other providers, community members, clients and their families
  • Ability to effectively respond to and manage psychiatric emergency situations
  • Knowledge of the agency's policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of cultural, ethnic, and linguistic needs of clients relating to cultural competence.
  • Unrestricted license to practice medicine in New York State
  • Completion of a post-graduate residency training program in General Psychiatry approved by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for entrance into their examination (for Adult Programs)
  • Completion of a post-graduate fellowship training program in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry approved by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for entrance into their examination (for Child and Family Programs)
  • Certification in General Psychiatry or Child & Adolescent Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or by a foreign board clearly equivalent (for Board Certified)
  • Eligibility for full and unconditional participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs.
  • Possession of current Controlled Substances Registration certificate from the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
  • Continued employment is based on the ability to maintain professional licensure, registration and participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive, diagnostic psychiatric evaluations
  • Evaluates clinical data pertaining to client’s medical status
  • Supervises or conducts chart reviews to ensure compliance with coding and documentation guidelines and governmental regulations
  • Adheres to regulations regarding billing documentation
  • Reviews and follows up on treatments ordered by other clinicians
  • Participates in the development of the individual plan of service for each client, with special attention to psychiatric and medical aspects of the plan
  • Reviews, approves and signs treatment plans of assigned clients
  • Documents client’s progress in progress notes as directed by program policy
  • Explains medication effects and side-effects to clients, family, and / or guardians
  • Obtains or reviews client’s and/or guardian’s signature on applicable consent to treatment forms
  • Prescribes psychiatric medications
  • Performs individual and group psychotherapy according to the treatment plans
  • Performs family evaluation and therapy, individually or jointly with other members of the treatment team in accordance with the treatment plan.
  • Performs crisis intervention as necessary
  • Consults with and advises clinical staff; provides review and education resulting from quality assurance chart audits
  • Participates in peer review process and in quality management activities
  • Submits service activity logs, weekly and monthly schedule, time records etc. to Program Director
  • Participates in or conducts case conference
  • participates in agency staff development and in-service education programs
  • Supervises the direct care activities of nursing, nurse practitioner and other staff assigned to this group.
  • Develops and implements training programs for staff.
  • Other job-related duties as needed
