About The Position

The Psychiatrist serves as the primary and substantive medical provider within the inpatient psychiatric hospital setting, responsible for direct patient care, clinical decision-making, and compliant medical documentation. This role ensures psychiatric services meet medical necessity, regulatory, documentation, and billing standards while supporting safe, effective, and evidence-based psychiatric treatment. The Psychiatrist provides face-to-face psychiatric evaluations, medication management, laboratory review, and interdisciplinary collaboration while maintaining full accountability for treatment decisions and patient outcomes. The Psychiatrist also provides clinical consultation and oversight to Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and other Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in accordance with hospital policy and applicable regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
  • Completion of an accredited Psychiatry Residency Program.
  • Active California Medical License.
  • DEA Registration.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry.
  • Experience providing psychiatric evaluations and medication management.
  • Must pass Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Community Care Licensing (CCL) background clearance.
  • TB clearance.
  • Employment is contingent upon successfully obtaining all required background and health clearances.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in inpatient psychiatric hospital settings.
  • Familiarity with Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health documentation and audit standards.
  • Experience supervising or collaborating with Nurse Practitioners in inpatient psychiatry.
  • Inpatient psychiatric hospital experience preferred.
  • Experience with acute psychiatric stabilization and crisis management.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary treatment teams and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive initial psychiatric evaluations and establish psychiatric diagnoses.
  • Provide ongoing follow-up psychiatric care and medication management as clinically indicated.
  • Perform face-to-face patient assessments and complete same-day documentation.
  • Serve as the primary clinical decision-maker regarding medication initiation, discontinuation, and adjustments, level of care determinations, and risk assessments.
  • Develop, review, and update individualized treatment plans.
  • Address psychiatric crises and behavioral emergencies as needed.
  • Complete timely, accurate, and compliant psychiatric documentation for all services rendered.
  • Ensure documentation clearly reflects independent physician assessment and clinical judgment, medical necessity for inpatient psychiatric treatment, and interventions performed and treatment recommendations.
  • Maintain compliance with Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH) requirements, Title 22 regulations, hospital policies and procedures, and inpatient billing and claiming standards.
  • Review and interpret laboratory results, EKGs, and other diagnostic reports.
  • Initiate and document appropriate clinical interventions based on findings.
  • Monitor medication safety and side effects, including metabolic syndrome monitoring, extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS), and psychotropic medication levels.
  • Collaborate with medical providers regarding patient medical conditions and treatment recommendations.
  • Provide on-site supervision, collaboration, and consultation to Nurse Practitioners and APPs.
  • Review complex or high-risk clinical cases and provide treatment recommendations.
  • Support clinical quality and adherence to standards of care.
  • Ensure clear distinction between physician-delivered services and APP-delivered services.
  • Participate in clinical mentorship and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Participate in daily treatment team rounds and interdisciplinary meetings.
  • Collaborate with Nursing, Social Services, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, and other disciplines.
  • Complete discharges and support discharge planning and continuity of care initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, patients, families, conservators, and external providers.
  • Promote safe prescribing practices and evidence-based psychiatric care.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, audits, and regulatory readiness initiatives.
  • Support hospital efforts related to patient safety, infection control, and risk reduction.
  • Participate in hospital committees and meetings as assigned.
