About The Position

This role provides a varied psychiatry practice across multiple care settings: Inpatient & Acute Services (12-bed Adult Acute Psychiatry Unit, 6-bed Crisis Stabilization Unit for substance use withdrawal and stabilization, Consult-Liaison Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine consults, Psychiatric ED consult service with dedicated behavioral health social workers). Outpatient Services include Behavioral Health Urgent Care, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), Therapy services with 10 FTE licensed mental health clinicians, and Telehealth psychiatry. The patient population includes adults with a full spectrum of psychiatric conditions, such as Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, Anxiety disorders, Substance Use Disorders, and Functional Neurologic Disorders. Care commonly involves management of suicidal ideation, psychosis, mania, substance withdrawal, capacity evaluations, and medication/psychotherapy management. The typical clinical volume includes 6–12 inpatient patients daily, 4–6 Consult-Liaison patients daily, 3–4 Addiction consults daily, and approximately 3 patients daily in the Crisis Stabilization Unit. Outpatient visits are 1-hour for new patients and 15–30 minutes for follow-ups. The academic and faculty role involves joining a growing academic psychiatry department with 8 psychiatrists and 2 nurse practitioners, and 5 psychiatry residents per class. It includes clinical supervision of residents and medical students, with opportunities for didactics, lectures, advising, research, and committee participation. Faculty receive protected educational time (0.1 FTE) for teaching responsibilities. Meritus Health is a mission-driven regional health system expanding behavioral health services across Maryland, supporting a growing academic environment with the upcoming Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine, launched in 2025, and additional residency programs in development.

Requirements

  • Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) with Psychiatry residency completion (implied by Psychiatrist title)
  • Ability to treat adults with a full spectrum of psychiatric conditions
  • Ability to manage suicidal ideation, psychosis, mania, substance withdrawal, capacity evaluations, and medication/psychotherapy management
  • Experience in inpatient, outpatient, and consult psychiatry
  • Interest in academic and faculty responsibilities including teaching and supervision

  • Perform Consult-Liaison Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine consults
  • Provide Psychiatric ED consult service
  • Treat adults with a full spectrum of psychiatric conditions, including Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, Anxiety disorders, Substance Use Disorders, Functional Neurologic Disorders
  • Manage suicidal ideation, psychosis, mania, substance withdrawal, capacity evaluations, and medication/psychotherapy management
  • Provide clinical supervision of residents and medical students
  • Participate in didactics, lectures, advising, research, and committee participation
  • Take at-home weekday call (at most once per week)
  • Participate in weekend call rotation (~every 6 weeks)
