About The Position

Backpack Healthcare is seeking a Virginia-licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) for a part-time, autonomous telehealth practice. The role involves providing accessible mental health care to children, teens, and young adults. As a clinician-led, minority-owned organization, Backpack Healthcare emphasizes clinical autonomy and collaborative, integrated care within a strong team environment. Clinicians have the freedom to practice at the top of their license while working alongside therapists, psychiatrists, and care coordinators to achieve better outcomes for children and families.

Requirements

  • Active, unrestricted Virginia PMHNP license
  • Ability to practice independently without an MD collaboration agreement
  • PMHNP-BC board certification
  • Active DEA license
  • Master's or doctoral degree from an accredited PMHNP program
  • Comfortable delivering care through telehealth
  • Afternoon, evening, and/or weekend availability required

  • Experience working with children, adolescents, young adults, and/or families preferred
  • Strong clinical judgment and comfort practicing autonomously

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and develop diagnostic formulations.
  • Create individualized treatment plans with patients and families.
  • Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications.
  • Monitor treatment effectiveness, safety, and clinical progress.
  • Provide brief supportive interventions and psychoeducation.
  • Collaborate with therapists, psychiatrists, and care coordinators through case consultation and care planning.
  • Educate families about diagnoses, medications, treatment options, and expected outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation in the EHR.
  • Support a culture of high-quality, trauma-informed, culturally responsive care.
